A tortoise will
I know I have seen a link to an add on page for your will, that will provide information regarding your tortoises and turtles welfare after you die. Does anyone by chance have that link? I cant find it anywhere now.

RE: A tortoise will
Is this the one you were thinking of it is a care Proxy that you can add to your will.

This is something all of us tort and turtle owners need to think about It will eventually happen to all of us.

RE: A tortoise will
That is the one Robyn, thanks. Yes we should all think about and get this taken care of. Anything could happen to any of us at anytime unfortunately. I will also be mailing it to a friend in AR, that has tortoises that he got as juveniles and hatchlings and are now nearing 45 years old. We were talking on the phone the other day and he mentioned that he needed to find someone to take care of his tortoises when he dies. He is an older gentleman, probably late 60s now. He was my original tortoise mentor and I have so much respect for him. I offered to take in his torts/pets if anything happens to him so I will be mailing this off to him in case he needs it.

RE: A tortoise will
That is great of you Anja to offer to Care for his torts.
Also for those who have no one to leave theirs to, there are clubs and sanctuaries as well as rescues that you can visit now and set this up with them.
About 8 years ago I had a scare. I was told I had less than a 50% chance of living 5 years. Well, I beat the odds, am doing great (except for the flu) and plan to stay around a lot longer but one never knows. So I have putting in writing what will happen to my torts as well as my dogs. My Daughter is all grown-up and she is an only and gets everything. She has said she would take my torts. However, between now and when the inevitable happens, well, its Nice to know wills can be changed when needed.

RE: A tortoise will
When I open my sanctuary I am defiantly going to offer this.
One thing that I would suggest that isn't on there. Even though it has the witness signature thing is to bring it to your bank and have it notarized. Usually free if you have any kind of bank account. If not only like 5 bucks.

RE: A tortoise will
RFBT I have placed this sheet in with my complete will. So it is notarized and is in the hands of an attorney. Just adding it to a complete will or living trust will make it more iron clad than just signed I think.

RE: A tortoise will
That is definatly a great idea, I have been looking at that, but have been putting it off. My kids are little and they both fight over which ones they get when I die, but if something happens before they are 18, I don't know what I would do. Thanks for getting me thinking...

RE: A tortoise will
I think too many folks put things like wills off thinking they have tomorrow to do it. Unfortunately some tomorrows unexpectedly will never come.
It's also wise to ask or at least let the person know who you are leaving animals to. I was talking to another Hingeback person awhile back and mentioned to her, that if I die, she is the one I want to either take my Hingebacks or find them suitable homes with Hingeback breeders. I think it took her a bit by surprise. By sharing with her my wishes while I am still alive and can answer all her questions, I am content that they will be well placed.
I did this with several different groups of my torts/turtles. My children have first option on several torts that have special meaning for them, but even those animals have a listing of at least two folks to take them in or to place them where they feel is best. I wanted at least two possible folks, because I know that sometimes wills don't get kept up-to-date and I may end up surviving them.

RE: A tortoise will
Hope this isn't inappropriate for this thread but I would like to offer up my home to anyone who doesn't have a family member or friend that will care for their pet tortoises after they pass.

RE: A tortoise will
I had printed out that will a while ago and scribbled down my "people" on it (which included you Anja (for whoever you can take, esp. my breeding Russians), Tracy (definately for Howie, and then whoever she can take) and TurtleTary (for the Red-foots of course)) - hoping you three don't mind - but then I lost it! Will have to start over... and get some addresses to put on it, too!
