Here is my little "Peanut", I got her almost 3 years ago from a woman who was moving and had many DT's and was giving them away. She had several the same age as Peanut and they all had the same serious pyramiding. This is why you do NOT feed DT's a steady diet of mixed veggies (the frozen packaged kind). Too much protein in the legumes. Peanut is the sweetest, most outgoing tortoise. Currently her enclosure is 4 X 8 raised and planted with a combination of mixed salad greens, squash plants, dandelions for her to graze on. I take her out also to roam with supervision to eat dried weeds. I cover the enclosure with palates at night to protect her from predators and I cover half during the day to shade her hide, it's hot. I think she is a female but not sure. What do you think? Is it too soon to tell?

Hi Leslie: She does indeed look to be female, but sometimes its hard to differentiate at that age. I have seen some come through my rescue looking like Peanut. Its usually pretty hard to make a desert tortoise develop pyramids, but every so often I get one in. Hopefully her growth will now smooth out, and as she grows the bumps will be less noticeable.

I started out with a desert tortoise, many years ago, and they are still my number 1 favorite. They are so personable and so easy to work with.

Thanks for sharing your pictures with us. I love her!!
