my 4" sulcata just pooped a 6" thin worm! UGH!!

OK!

you all know for weeks now ive been up and down with this little guy
trying everything i can imagine to get him healthy

Vet trips and fecal exams came back all negative 3 weeks ago..

TODAY! he pooped out a HUGE long thin white worm ( like spaghetti noodle )

He's got WORMS! UGH!

Talked to the vet they are making up a batch of medication for him right now

UGH!!!

they suggested that first sample came back negative for one of two reasons, #1 , they test for eggs not adult worms.. , or #2 fecal sample wasnt fresh enough to show a positive result..

either could be the case i suppose but ive seen it for my self now and am hopefully getting it taken care of starting today

He's been more active since i started getting him outside.. but not been eating for the last week now.

Anyone ever had a tortoise with worms like this?

Whats the recovery time? what damage has been done? any information is greatly appreciated..

how is the medication usually given? im sure my vet will fill me in when i go there today to pickup the medication.. just asking generally for those who have shared this experience!

I feel like ive had everything go wrong that could go wrong with this guy.. sigh

my snakes and chameleons never gave me this much of a headache!

!!!!!!!! UGH!! i say UGH AGAIN!!!

Sounds like a roundworm. Vet wii probably give it panacur. That and a later dose (I think in 10 days) should clear it up. I assume your vet knows not to give ivermictin. This is an oral medication.

Just think how small your tort is to have a 6 inch worm coiled up inside his tummy. I imagine he felt pretty full all the time. Poor Baby. Glad you had your eye on him to see (yuck) and take care of this right away. Hopefully now he will be in good shape. We all know with what you and him have been through you both deserve some Good Feeling times. Big Grin

No IVERMICITN No matter what. It is toxic to torts.

Yup round worm indeed

Panacur is indeed what was given

Oraly..

they had a hard time gettin him to open his mouth but they got it done

poor little guy has been through alot

and yes a follow up in 2 weeks for another dose of the medication.

April 30th is next visit.

I sure hope this helps him along.

I'm sure he's happy to have that worm out of him, crossin my fingers that he'll be on the mend

i have very little hair left to pull out at this point haha

Is it fun giving oral meds to a tort. It took 1/2 hour to give panacur to my star the 1st time and 45 minutes the 2nd time. You have to crazy to keep these guys. LOL

Fingers crossed this will do it and you can let your hair grow back and your tort can get back to normal.
Keep us updated.

doesn't it seem a little negligent on the vet's part to not have seen this in the first place? or is this a common oversight?

Well,

Fecal tests came back negative for presents of eggs from the worms

and there were no worms present in his stools till the other day , same day we returned to the vet and he was medicated.

I dont fault the vet for it really,

Just to report this morning he passed 3 more worms, smaller and they were no longer alive unlike the larger one he passed the first time.

ugh
hope thats all of em! jeez
