new hermann enclosure

I took pictures step by step to show what I did, but one of my kids erased them from my cameraRolleyes. I took an old bookcase and fashioned this 3 x 2 tort table.

I lined the bottom with some heavy linoleum flooring I had (still need to secure the linoleum to the bookcase) and used aspen shavings made for snake enclosures (much finer than small animal shavings), which they just love to burrow into Smile

Grumpy waking up from his nap (too many camera flashes, lol)

I'm going to get a 6 x 2 foot bookcase and do the same thing for the red foots, with some modifications of course for humidity and temperature stabilization. What do you think???

Carolyn it looks great. Had any difficulties with them climbing and or flipping yet? They are very sweet looking. Is his name really "Grumpy"? Tongue What are their names?

Hi Carolyn: What does the aspen look like when it gets wet? Is it still good to use? I've never tried it, but the evaporative cooler pads I use are made out of aspen and they are wet all summer long. Been trying to find something cheaper to use than what I'm now using.

As long as the shredded aspen is well ventilated it will dry out very well. We use a ton of it in our snake cages. I also have a section of it in the Hermanns bachelor pad and when I spray it down its completely dry again within a day or so. Im thinking of adding a section of it in the Boxie tank for them to burrow down in as well.

It's great! It dries out nicely, 99.9% dust free, resists mold, and doesn't trigger my husband's dirt allergies Big Grin. I also like it because when they poop it stands out, and makes thourough cleaning a breeze!

No problems with flipping. They have plenty of room to move around, and pretty much ignore the half log hutch I have in there for them. They like to burrow under the shelf of that white rock, or sleep next to the warming rock (which I removed the electric cord from to keep my well intentioned kids from plugging it in!).

I really haven't come up with permanent names yet....I just couldn't resist calling him Grumpy from the expression on his face, LOLWink
