can you see how his stare may look a little ornery?

He has been such a pig all day today. I think I finally got him happy...

for those of you sulcata experts - would you mind right clicking on the photo to view the image and taking a close look to see if he looks ok?

No expert here, but Percy looks pretty good, a little minor pyramiding from what I can see in the pic. Just make sure he gets a good diet, etc now that you have him. Smile Are you adding hay into his greens? He really needs a high fiber diet consisting mostly of hay/grasses with a few greens mixed in. Wink

I haven't added hay yet because I haven't figured out where to buy it or keep it since I live in dorms. I can keep it at my mom's house, but I still have to find out what kind to buy and go find it. I am guessing I can find it at local feed stores?

I take him out for "Walks" on the parade grounds at school and let him graze for a few hours. He eats mostly grass - dead and fresh - and clovers.

He has eaten on occasion bark and the aspen shavings in this container - his poops are hard as a rock.

what do you think -is that sufficient?

Hi Janie,

You can order chopped salad hay from Carolina Pet Supply. It comes in a ziploc bag so very easy for storage. Its chopped up small so all you have to do is spritz the greens with a little water and mix the hay into it. The water helps it stick to the greens so he gets some with each bite. Some of my tort will also eat the hay by itself if I spray it down with water and let it sit for a few mins then wring it out so that its not dripping wet.

You can find the salad hay here at Carolina Pet Supply The 1lb of hay comes in a ziploc gallon size bag.

They also have some Organic Herbal Salad that is good for adding some variety.

Just be sure that anywhere he grazes has not been treated with any chemicals for at least 6 months. You might have to ask the the groundskeepers at the school.

I already asked them - they don't use chemicals on the grass in the spot I use.

Is the grazing sufficient or do I need to make sure to provide hay as well?

There are also a lot of feed stores around here - is it really necessary to order this blend of hay off the internet or can I just go and get a bale of hay from the local feed store?

I am not trying to cut corners, but I am just saying hay is available to me at home.

Any good grass/bermuda/timothy/orchard hay is OK for them, no Alfalfa due to it being too high in protein. By all means find some locally, I was just giving you an option for some that would be easier for you to store. You should be able to find bags of it as well at your local Petco/Petsmart small enough for you to store easily as well. You will just need to chop it up smaller so he will eat it most likely.
