I wanted to bring up the subject of pyramiding in Sulcatas...

I spoke with the person we bought our Rocky from the other day about the subject of Pyramiding. He said that the cause of Pyramiding was now confirmed to be a lack of HUMIDITY and not due to diet as previously believed. I would love to hear thoughts on this...

It is amazing how different the information you get from person to person website to website...

Many people I hear feed their Sulcatas fruit. a no no, veggies another supposed no no, greens which are supposed to be a no no( limited to very small quantities like a tiny handful 1x a week with the vitamins on them)

The main diet should be a never ending supply of Timothy and Alpfalfa hays...

with the natural grazing grasses etc...

But people will tell you greens like kale and spinach and leaf lettuce etc....its just so confusing. I think it would be super if all of the sites out there could get their information correct and keep it uniform so we were all feeding our torts the right diet and watering them appropriately.

I had no clue that they needed humidity. Did anyone else?

He was saying that in the wild Sulcatas get humidity by burrouging into the earth etc...He mentioned that it could be provided by adding a tupperware container upside down with a doorsized hole for them cut into it and wet moss inside....?
Im guessing just until they are able to be outside .

Pyramiding is caused through alkinds of things.
Such as:
Wrong diet
Wrong housing
Wrong Temperatures
Wrong Humidity
Wrong Husbandry completely.

And pyramding never goes away new growth makes it look smoother.

I think different sites say different things because a lot of them go with there own experiences of raising the animal they are writing about. I agree with you though it would be easier if everyone had the same thing on each site, but it will never be like that. A great site for sulcatta's would be the sulcatta station, or chelonia.org site.

I just adopted my sulcata about a month ago. He was terribly neglected and improperly housed and fed. I am currently looking to rehome him in the south or in a much warmer climate than WI. But for now, I am gladly taking care of him and completely enjoying his company...heres a pic

^^^^I've seen worse. Good thing he's in a good home now.

I was told that my 4 month old is too young to eat hay of any kind. They said because she wont be able to break and chew it up yet. Ive been feeding her organic red leaf lettuce, kale, collards and some spinach. I add the calcium and vitamines several times a week to it. I hope I'm feeding "her" right.

That s my favorite too
