Hi everyone-
I have 3 tortoises and I thought I would introduce myself and tortoises to everyone. I have two pancakes that are both female (purchasing male this month). Their names are Tess and Mamie (how I got the names is a long story). I have had Tess since April and Mamie came in mid-August. I am going to attempt to breed them once the male arrives. They currently live in their spacious custom cage indoors and will be outdoors in weather permitting conditions. My third tortoise is a sulcata. He is about 4 inches (estimate) and I have had him since he was a hatchling. His name is Abraham. He also lives indoors, but will be outdoors when the weather is warm.

After reading how I was unfit to care for Bob I wasn't sure I wanted to share these with the group.
But...my sister asked that I share them and so I shall.
I recently had to drive to Yvonne's house in Calif to make a tortoise switch and visit her and while I was there I was also going to drive a couple hundred more miles to meet with Tom to go and see his home and the infamous "ranch" and what a visit it was! Most of the animals are at the ranch. But he had a dog kenneled at his house who was just amazing. Tom took him out and ran him through a series of exercises that the dog understood very well. He didn't hesitate at all and went from being a happy dog to an attack dog in a heart beat. Tom didn't have to tell this guy twice what to do. As a retired dog trainer I was very impressed. This dog is a worker and knows just what to do. There were several dogs there that Tom said were actors not pets and they know their position in life very well. They weren't barking or very excited at seeing strangers. Yet they were bright and paid attention to what was going on.
Tom is seriously good to look at and very social. He is friendly, intelligent and educated. It was very pleasant to visit with him. My main goal was to ride a camel and an elephant but unfortunately that was not to be. At first I was disappointed, but the visit was so much that the disappointment faded pretty fast.
I got a tour of his beautiful Southern Calif home with it's bright blue tiled pool. It was a very hot day but it was cool and dim inside the house. His 3 year old daughter Ava was going with us. She was bright and talkative and very well mannered.
So here are some pictures of what I saw...

I got to pet a Rhino, how cool was that...

He had herds of every kind of hoofed animal needed for a movie from camels, to goats, horses, oxen, buffalo, and too many more to list...

Big baby giraffe and zebra (beautiful black striped faces)...

Got to touch the giraffe's face...

OMG! A baby camel! How sweet is he? But I'm 5'8" and he was taller then me...

Such a beautiful face! All the animals are worked with so much that they can all be touched and petted and handled. They are all calm workers not pets...

More of the herds...

Need I say more???

He had large herds of any kind of animal needed. All of the pens were clean, none had old poop or garbage in them. They were all big enough and the animals looked healthy and well cared for.
When I was shown his tortoises I didn't have my camera so I didn't get pictures of them, but that simply gives me an excuse to go back for another visit. They are again well cared for and in great pens with lots of room. Daisy even looks feminine and it was easy to tell she was a girl. I was surprised as I thought all tortoises looked the same. Daisy is a girl, no doubt!
We also got to go for an In n Out burger...Tom's revenge on me as the day before I had some teeth pulled and a surgery done in my mouth and could only have some fries and a shake! That's mean all right!
I got to see and pet the elephants and got elephant snot on my face but that will be a second thread tomorrow. Thanks Tom, it was wonderful and exciting and I loved every minute of it!!!

I have two hatchlings Fred and Ethel. I got them at the beginning of July, both weighed in at about 40 grams. Currently Fred weighs 112g, Ethel only weighs 69g. Fred is by far more outgoing and eats constantly. Ethel sleeps more, I see him/her eat but just not as often. My question is should I separate them for a while to give Ethel a chance to catch up.
Both currently live in a tort table I made which at this point is only being half used. It is 6'x4' so they are in a 4x3. I was going to give them access to the rest of it next spring. I can easily move Fred to the half not being used.
They also get outside for up to 3 hours a day depending on the weather. Besides the difference in weight they both seem fine. I had them fecal tested and everything was fine.

I've had my Russian Tortoise for probably around 3 or so years, and just recently I have noticed something troubling with her left eye. It has a white looking film over it. I can see her eye underneath of the film though. I just recently started putting eye drops in it to see if they will clear it up. She doesn't move around much and hasn't seemed to eat in a long time. Any clue as to what it could be? Thanks!

Monster is settling in fine. I'll post pics of his new home I'm building in my garage in a month or 2. For now, he is in one of my large tort tables, enhanced to meet his needs as best I can for now.

He loves eating my slugs and snails. We have tons of them available here in the PNW, so my boxies and Monster will have free fresh meat most of the year. He also eats Dubia Roaches, rabbit, mice, rats, fish, chicken, and sometimes a little cat or dog food. But I try to stick with whole food items as much as possible.

So someone said my sulcata looked like he needed a soak. I put in a water hole thing for him which he has not used at all. So, should I soak him forcibly? I tried putting him IN his water hole and he hated it and promptly crawled away.

So should I put him in a tub with warm water (like 70 degrees warm?) How often?

He is 57 pounds and has only grown maybe 2 pounds in the past year.

I am looking to get a heat pad/pig blanket for Lana this winter. I will be keeping her in a room in the basement. The room is actually a wine seller with stone walls and no window and it's about 8x10' I have a heat lamp now to keep her warm at night and will be getting UVB for winter also. Lana is 12'' and weighs 13.5 lbs. What size pad do I need? Does it need to be bigger than her and by how much? Should I get one that she can grow into? I also have Tank that is smaller so he could have it if she outgrows it and get her a bigger one. Advise please cause these things are not cheap.

GRAND ISLE, La. — An offshore oil rig exploded Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Coast Guard was responding to reports of people in the water.
The explosion sparked a fire aboard the oil rig, owned by Mariner Energy. It occurred west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive BP oil spill.
A commercial helicopter company reported the blast around 9:30 a.m. CDT Thursday, Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats were en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.
The Coast Guard said initial reports indicated all 13 crew members from the rig were in the water. One was injured, but the others were said to be OK and awaiting rescue.
The platform is in about 2,500 feet of water, the Coast Guard said, and was not currently producing.
Roughly 206 million gallons of oil from an undersea well spilled into the Gulf after BP's Deepwater Horizon rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers. That was the biggest maritime oil spill in history.
Mariner Energy is one of the leading independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the Gulf of Mexico. As of the start of the year, the company had interests in approximately 240 blocks on the continental shelf and 100 blocks in deepwater.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
