Can I also say that you are obviously a very caring responsible young person who wants to do their best for these torts for the week they are in your care which is fantastic. You are taking on a lot but please shout for help here if needed, we will all be glad to advise as best we can.

I'm afraid they don't know their age: they were just told that they're 'pretty old.' They are apparently fully grown.

We don't actually have them yet so I can't post pictures.

They came and looked at our orchard and said it should be fine. We do get foxes, but they shouldn't be able to get in... They're too big to be carried away by birds.

Argh! I don't know what to do about shelter! I don't think they have a heated shed, either. Help, anyone?!

What do the owners do with them at night?

I could be wrong- perhaps they have a small shed. I'll double check as soon as I can, but they're my brother's friend's family so I don't know their contact details. My mum will text them.

Thanks for all your help.

Will they need a heat source outside? Are there battery operated ones? I have no where to plug one in. Or should I bring them to the garage- we have central heating there.

They're not with me yet so I have time to work out a solution.

We're now thinking about getting a vivarium or tortoise table to put in our garage- obviously with heat lamps and UV light. Would this be okay? And I've heard tort tables are preferable. Would you agree?

As for the ones that we'll be sitting, we've not even heard when we're having them yet! Sometime this week, they said...?

As long as it is big enough (or both tables are big enough if you separate) and have proper temp levels in the important spots and humidity levels etc, I don't see why the garage should be a problem? I know some hibernate theirs in their garage. Do the cars ever go in the garage? (Worried about gasoline fumes and other such fumes).
If you mean the commercially bought tort table, then no that is way too small those are more for babies and small juvies. Some build their own tort table using old bookcases and/or dressers.

Sorry, I hope I'm not confusing you all! The tortoises in question are only a pair I'm pet-sitting. Should I maybe have a word with their owners about how they're keeping them?

My dad has offered to build a tortoise table. What dimensions would you recommend?

The car does sometimes go in the garage in winter; however, ours is multi-storey and the tort would be upstairs. There's a staircase and a door separating him/her from downstairs, so would it be okay?
