My 13yo daughter was at a friends house yesterday and she texts me in a panic. Her friends brother has some turtles and in horrible care. First she sends me a pic of this little ornate telling me about its beak

Then she tells me this adult came out of hibernation this way according to the brother and wants to know what to do. She said it hasn't opened its eyes in a while. So I tell her to talk to them about soaks with baby food and eye drops. Later it actually opened its eyes and ate 2 worms. I'm pretty sure it was very dehydrated. It's legs look very small too.

Then I start asking about where they keep them. She calls me about to start crying. She has been around ours her whole life and seeing this tank just crushed her. As you can see in this pic it's terrible plus there is also a 3 toed hybrid in there.ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1466618325.105688.jpg

So now I'm going to take in the 2 ornates in and go over and build them an outdoor enclosure for the 3 toed. As if I don't all ready have enough of my own, but I can't let these 2 continue with that care. I will bet I end up with the 3 toed before long too.

I know, they think just throw them in something and they will be ok.

Oh lord... How did they end up with so many turtles in there?! I'm assuming the son must have caught them, because if he ordered them online or purchased them from a pet store, there's no way he wouldn't have come across care instructions (even if they were misguided instructions--I mean, this doesn't even appear like an attempt to house correctly)... Unless he just didn't care at all. And why do parents allow their kids to keep pets without knowing any of the proper care? I'll just never understand that.

Good on you for taking these two in.

That's the thing about it here, they are wild and everywhere here. Our State allows people to pick them up and keep them but the problem is people don't understand the care so then they house them like that and either they die or they let them go in bad shape because they don't know how to care for them after they get sick. I'm going to have to re-home some soon or my wife is going to go nuts.:)

It's a kid thing. The folks leave the responsibility to the kid and never check to make sure the animals are thriving.

"Mom, can I keep this turtle I found?" "Yes, but you have to take care of it, I'm not going to do it for you."

I was impressed they went and got eye drops and baby food last night. The boys mom realized its more care than what they were giving. I told them once I get the outdoor set up and They get better understanding of things, If they wanted I would return the 2 I'm taking.

I agree, Mom probably said yes to 1 and before she knew it, there were 3.

Eric you know what's funny about that. I play travel softball all over the States and that's the nickname they gave me because I'm always diving in the outfield. One guy even cropped my picture and put it on Superman when I was put in the Kansas USSSA Hall of Fame. Can't wait to show that picture to my wife and kids.

What a nice looking turtle.

I agree, I'm happy that they let me take it before it had the bad care the others have suffered. They had it given to them last year by someone who found it in a swimming pool. Good news is they are great people and are willing to listen. They spent about an hour here last night looking at my enclosures and discussing different ideas. All they have been feeding is worms every now and then, so I cut up spring mix with vegetables and strawberries with some Mazuri mixed in. The little one went nuts, They couldn't believe it. I printed off care sheets and the little boy who is 10 right away started telling his mom what they needed to do. I'm going over this weekend to start looking at a good spot for an outdoor enclosure.
