Hello guys, so i just bought a pair of russian tortoise and they are lovely creatures, they seems to be healthy and active, however the male tortoise refused to eat anything and always hides in the tortoise house unlike the female that has been eating really well and exploring every part of her enclosure

I'm guessing either he is still adapting to the new environment or the food i provided is not the same with what he was provided in his old place

I'm just afraid of the possibility that he wont eat forever and eventually die

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome

Are you aware that Russians are very territorial and should not be kept as a pair?

They are not social. They don't get lonely or want a friend. Another tortoise is competition for food and space.

These two should be kept entirely separately. If you want to breed them in future, introduce them to mate and then split them.

You will probably find they settle much quicker when they're not worrying about another tortoise in their enclosure.

You must not feed them together. Separately means separately for everything. Especially for food.

He is probably afraid to eat. Bullying is mental as well as physical. Leave him in his enclosure where he knows there is no other tortoise and feed him there.

These two tortoises each need a proper sized enclosure where they live and eat in complete ignorance of the other tortoise.

Don't put them together to eat or to soak.

Don't let them roam the floor of your home alone or together.
