Eco earth

I bought a big bag of eco earth substrate, and Terry seems to enjoy it much more then the mulch he was walkin on before. Problem is, on his rounds around the enclosure, he likes to wade threw his water dish and the substrate attaches to him like glue until it and he dries. It doesn’t take long, but he had gotten some stuck over his eye and it seemed like it was bothering him. It’s very loose, kind of like soil but made with coconut fibers. Is it safe?

If it's the eco earth that I'm familiar with then it is coco coir. It's harmless but messy. To help with the substrate getting in the water, you might try placing a ring of smooth rocks around the dish. It won't stop it all but I find that it helps.

Coco coir is safe, but I don't like it for sulcatas because of the reasons you are seeing. If you are going to use coir, you need a very thick damp layer and you need to pack it down with your hand. After a couple of weeks it usually gets less messy, but its still too messy for sulcatas for my liking.

Fine grade orchid bark works best.

The ZooMed Reptibark is good, but its overpriced. I buy it in bulk at garden centers. Just bought 8 more bags yesterday. This is the type I've got:


I do not mix it with anything else.
