I buy the biggest container of Zoo Med Grassland Tortoise Food that Amazon sells. Trouble is, it's not fresh. So when I put it in a cup of water in the fridge overnight, there are still little hard unabsorbed balls in the center of each pellet.

So I was reading my label to see if it says anywhere when it was packed, wondering if I would be able to buy a fresher package off the Zoo Med site, when I spied a very tiny sentence at the very bottom of the label that I needed to get my magnifying glass to read:

It's that very bottom sentence printed in white. Here's what it says, "Pyramiding is NOT normal and is likely caused by poor diet (high protein/low fiber) and low humidity."

Yea!! We're starting to make a dent. But they only get a partial score. . . but then who knows? Maybe high protein and low fiber do contribute. But YEA!!! LOW HUMIDITY!!!!!

I've found that sometimes it is a extra day on many pellets. The Alfalfa pellets and the ZooMed take Monday morning to Wednesday morning. Bermuda grass pellets will expand fully in about an hour.

They soften a LOT faster if you use warm water. We heat our house with a wood stove in the winter, so I just put the container of water and pellets next to it during softening. They become mush in only about an hour.

I find the warm water works faster with the mazuri too. If in a rush use warm or hot water.

Staying on point with this post....yeah for the vendor mentioning that HUMIDITY and diet could impact pyramiding! :)

Thank you. I was thinking everyone missed the point. I am perfectly capable of adding more water and allowing more time, but I wanted to see if I could buy fresher. But the whole point was that big business (Zoo Med) has recognised the need for humidity to curtail pyramiding! No comments about that?

As you said, that is quite an achievement. And certainly proof that the new method is slowly being accepted. Really good news.

I'm glad someone in the business world is finally acknowledging that pyramiding is something that we are responsible for preventing! :D
