I’m honestly starting to think that. Stella is much more aggressive. When I drop her food, she runs over and digs in. When I put them together, “she” chases “him” around and bites his legs and then will proceed to start eating his food??? She has been like this since I brought her home at 32g! He’s nearly 20 times her size lol He has never “shown any aggression” towards her, but tucks tail and runs when she heads his way...

Monthly Update

When Spur was Stella’s age he was 70g lighter than what she is currently and not near as active. I know each tortoise has its own personality but Stella and Spur at polar opposites, she’s only 180g but will chase him (6lbs) around the yard and run him off his food. She eats everything in sight and “runs” to me as soon as I put new food in her dish. We were extra careful with her at first due to her size and probably getting led astray a bit at a reptile show, but she has really done great so far.

I have no clue what either of their sexes are and have no prediction nor expectation I only ask this because I was told Stella was incubated to be female. I just wanted to hear from some folks who have experience on how accurate this is because I have zero experience in this field. It doesn’t not bother me either way what they turn out to be!

I wonder if part of the difference is the climate. Even though you were raising Spur indoors in Alaska, maybe there was something, such as the lack of natural daylight part of the year, that had an effect on his growth.

Thank you Ms. Karen, I fully agree with you, after looking at her intently, it’s quite obvious. I should have been more intentional but we’ll do everything we can to keep her moving forward. I’m very optimistic, she’s a very lively little thing and seems to be doing great. I’ll continue to do as advised and I’ll be soaking her 2-3 times a day totally 1.5-2hrs. View attachment 243126

Please please please . New born hatching should still in a warm hight humidity nursery for at least 22 hours a day. During winter season you don’t wanna soak your new hatching everyday. And I don’t know if it’s a typo or not. You do not soak new hatching more then 10 minutes! The water will take away its body temperature. Best salt way it’s let it still in a stable condition for another 10-20 days. All the best!

The post to which you replied was from about 5 months ago. I would frequently change the water out to ensure it stayed warm. She is going on 6 months old now and is better than ever.

You could be onto something here. Even when I first received him, he was always a little more timid. But I do bet you’re right about the natural light we had there.
