Hi,

I'm not a breeder, just trying to help!

The post is a little vague. What kind of tortoise are you thinking about? And are you opposed to shipping? It might open up your opinions.

Best of luck

I’d like Burmese star tortoise. I want a local breeder because I want to drive there and take a look at the tortoise before buying it so I don’t want to do shipping

If I may make an observation/suggestion:

When investing in a tortoise like a Burmese Star, How it was incubated, How it was started its first two weeks from pipping, and how it is being kept is of vital importance. That produces the best tortoises with well developed organs, well hydrated, and functioning properly to ensure the least amount of problems. It is common to get a very young tortoise that looks good, but in a few months, you will see it just is not growing as it should. I believe finding a breeder of great reputation, known for producing strong, viable tortoises is the most important.

There has just been so much learned about proper husbandry, incubation and starting in the past decade, and continues to improve each year. A breeder not plugged into the newest info and updating and sharing what works, is often simply doing what worked in the past, but may well be producing tortoises that fail to thrive. They often do not even know this as the problems can surface months later, and the breeder, if contacted, simply sees the new owner's husbandry as the issue! May or may not be true - you just don't know for sure.

You would be better served and end up far happier if you went with someone like @Tom I believe he still has some Burmese available that are now already well started and a few months old. Well established and growing well. A breeder like that will send you pictures of available tortoises and you can pick what you want.

Shipping is easy and fast. A tortoise is dropped off at the shipper late afternoon and you have it by 10 AM the next morning.

I could not have explained it any better than Mark. The chances of finding a local breeder anywhere in the country that puts the time into babies, introduces the foods that I introduce, or starts them anywhere near as well as I do, are slim to none.

I have 25 babies left for the year. All are thriving and growing, several months old, getting soaked daily and sunned several times a week. Here is a picture of them soaking yesterday, @DeanS style:

I took the wire cover off the pool for the pic.

I'm asking $800 each and volume discounts are available. I'll pay for overnight shipping.

Thanks. Looks great. I will keep in mind but still need some to consider to buy this. I will contact you or update this thread when I want to buy it.

Is there any temperature requirement for the shipping? I plan to buy one in late December. I will be out of U.S.A. in early December for 2 weeks. I want to buy one after that. But the temperature in my place is around 40F in late December.
