Is it worth it? My Sulcata is currently a little bigger than 7 inches, and it’s getting a bit hard to feed him with winter coming in. I already have him eating orchard hay which definitely helps amend the grocery store food that I know I’m going to start having to give him soon(and I can’t find endive/escarole for the life of me), and I think he would appreciate having some tortoise crack once or twice a week. He’s also going to be living outside full time soon in the insulated nightbox I’m making in my construction class(pictures will come when it’s done ;)), and from what I’ve heard, mazuri can get them growing pretty quick. 7 inches is a bit on the small side for going outside, isn’t it?

Being too young for a job, money is a bit scarce when it comes to buying things like this that I technically don’t need, and the mazuri would take up almost every bit of the 50 dollars I’ve started saving up for a ball python enclosure over the past few months, if you include shipping and tax. I can obviously wait to get a ball python and it would do me some good to do some more research, but... that’s a lot of money to spend on one thing, lol.

So before I spend all of the money I’ve saved up over the past few months, is it worth it? I really want to get it, but at the same time, I’m just a little worried Curtis will be an ungrateful child and decide he doesn’t like it and I’ll have bought a 25 pound bag of pellets for nothing.

Tom is such a sweetheart. I'm sure your sully will love it. But, before buying it ask any and all local feed stores if they can order it for you. It's a purina product, so anyone selling purina might be able to order it for you. Look into large animal, farm animal feed stores. I order mine from a farm feed/supply store up in Michigan. Im the only one they order it for and I get it for around 29 bucks or so a bag. I too order a couple bags at a time and freeze it.

Thank you, I’ll see if I can do that!

...Wait...

Is this a serious offer? O.O
Yes. Its no big deal. You're a good kid and I only pay about a dollar a pound since I buy it in bulk. I'll send you a bunch of cactus pads with it too. I'll fill up one of those flat rate boxes from the post office. If we don't help out the younger generation, there won't be a tortoise hobby in the future.

If your tortoise likes it, you can buy it in smaller quantities from Tortoisesupply.com, or many other sellers, if your local feed store can't get it. Mazuri sells it in one pound bags too.

Why not get a bag of the LS from Petco or PetSmart and see if he'll eat that. My Redfoot loves it, I've never had to try the original.

Tom, you mentioned cactus pads....do you grow them or purchase them? I'd love to introduce Twix (50lbs) and Mr. Goodbar (80 lbs) to them. We already use Mazuri, and love the quality and quantity options.

He's eventually going to love the Mazuri though mine ignored it for about a week. Now he comes running when i drop it in. You'd be shocked how big the chickory family is and I learned by googling all sorts of greens that make great substitutes. Also, whole foods always has specialty greens but that gets pricey for the larger species hehe.

I figured I could give a little update-
Curtis is now hooked on mazuri, and when I give him a small pile once or twice a week, he comes RUNNING. I’ll have to get a picture of his mazuri mustache eventually. I’ll definitely have to buy a large bag.

I pour the bag into a covered plastic bin. But for you and how slowly your tortoise would make it gone, you can freeze it in smaller plastic containers.

I am so busy with so many things... I wish I had time to do that sort of thing on a more regular basis. Its falconry season right now, so I've got no time for much of anything.

I'm pretty sure @TylerStewart and his lovely wife over at https://www.tortoisesupply.com sell cactus pads. Plant a bunch and after a year or two, you'll have plenty to feed out.

@Will also sells several versions of dehydrated tortoise chips. I've tried them and my tortoises loved them.

Don't worry if your tortoises don't like it at first. Keep trying and eventually they will love them. Some tortoises take to it right away, and some tortoise need an introduction process. Its really good tortoise food.
