Las Vegas- is this a desert tortoise?

Yes, it's a desert tortoise. Pretty rough-looking, so he may be a wild tortoise, however, because you can still see all the ridges of new growth, that's something you mainly see in someone's pet tortoise. Being wild, those ridges get worn smooth.

I love these tortoises! So basic and chunky looking. Absolute tortoiseness.

He\she does look rough indeed. Most likely captive tortoise because of the flatter shell. Wild tortoises tend to be higher domed, something that doesn't happen in captivity

Excuse my ignorance, but why do wild torts tend to dome more than captive ones?

Yep, a wild DT is usually high domed. Captive raised are flatter no one knows why though
