Hi all,

I have had my 15 year old male Russian Tortoise Reed for about a month, and noticed his shell looking a little odd. When I got him his shell looked like this, and it hasn’t changed, but I just wanted to check that everything is normal. The guy we got him from said he was totally healthy, I’m just not sure his shell is supposed to look like this. He’s a super active little guy and he eats a lot, and doesn’t have any signs of sickness. I am worried that this might be shell rot, but I don’t want to worry unless I have to. I have attached a photo of his shell, if anyone could please help me that would be great!

Thank you,
Emma and Reed :)

We get a lot of posts with photos of scratched up Russians.
They are very scrappy. Very active and get bruised up a lot.
It's not an issue.
Its normal.
I'd be suspicious about one with a perfect, un scuffed shell, myself.

Hi ZEROPILOT,

This is so great to hear! Thank you so much, I feel so much better!

He’s a little more dinged up than some but it’s old damage, from his old life scraping around boulders and such. Nothing to worry about.

These are pics of Sally and her shell. On these pics, you can see her shell and the wide growing spurt she was going through

You can see new growth coming through underneath , it has been through the wars. Now it is in your care you ensure it is provided the best care and able to heal and grow with heat, light, humidity, soaks, diet and water.
I have attached the care sheet....

Have fun with your new charge :tort: :) :tort:
