I hope to post more updates in the near future. Bold and Pinstripe will soon be moving into a 40 breeder tank. The 20 long tank that they are currently in will not be empty... Two spotted turtle hatchlings (that we got at the National Reptile Breeders Expo in Daytona Beach on Saturday) will be moving in!

I managed to lose Bold for a few minutes this afternoon in the 20 long mud turtle tank. You wouldn't think it's possible, but she blended in so well with the tank furniture that it took me a good ten minutes to find her. I think Pinstripe might have been trying to cover for her, too.

Never underestimate a mud turtle... :)

We moved Bold and Pinstripe into their new 40 breeder tank a few nights ago. It's sparsely furnished right now, but they seem to be enjoying the extra space.

Thank you! We're going to have to add a bit more "clutter" to the tank to make them feel more comfortable, but I really like being able to see their colors and patterning clearly.

The girls even had to take a quick shower under the sink faucet before they got to go into their new tank!

Interesting observation on that part... Those mud turtle mouths can chomp through a single layer of paper towel in front of their face, no problem. Fortunately, I learned many months ago to keep any bite-able parts of myself on the OPPOSITE end of the carapace from those formidable little beaks of theirs!

Pinstripe: "Hrmm... Mostly flat... sand... with mountains... Could we be in Arizona?"

Bold: "Maybe New Mexico?"

Pinstripe: "I don't know, Bold... Did we make that left turn at Albuquerque?"

What is that substrate they're in?

They really do look like they're kind of amazed at the scenery!!!!:):<3:

The substrate is playground sand, at least for now. So far, it seems like the turtles are less likely to ingest the playground sand than the "aquarium sand." The particles of playground sand are more fine, and the girls seem to have less trouble picking pellets up from off the bottom. So far, but it's only been a few days.

Right now, we have a handful of large, smooth stones (maybe homemade pancake size, but thicker) scattered around the tank, so the turtles can climb on them, rest, and breathe without having to work to reach the surface.

The girls have their "Pride Rock" and their artificial bonsai tree in that section of the tank, so at least their old furniture moved with them. We added in a new hide with a basking area on top and steps built in for easy access. They like it. We wanted to make sure the girls have something familiar, especially since their new accommodations are sparsely furnished.

The artificial bonsai moved with the turtles, so I guess turtles still grow in trees... :D

It's hard to tell in the picture, but Bold is actually standing on the tree, not on Pinstripe's shoulders. That's what they told me, anyway... ;)
