You might consider investing the money to get your new tortoise checked up with a vet with expertise in sulcatas as per Toms recommendation. Save some heartache.

By the way welcome to the forum. There are a lot of people here that will really help you with your new tortoise. I wish you had a better start. I’ve had desert tortoises pretty much all my life but I never had a leopard tortoise and without the people on this forum I don’t think my tortoise would be alive today. I don’t know when he was born but he’s roughly one year old and he looks awesome when he was a really slow start when I got him. I hope you get a little cutie soon and be sure to post pics. And boiler destroy everything you had with the prior tortoise as above because it’s possibly infectious.

So I actually called the pet store today since I didn’t have time to make it to the store. They said I could bring him back to the store and they would replace him with another tortoise from a different store. The replacement will be free of charge. I asked if they were from the same litter or ever had contact with the any of their other litters and they said no. Because the other tortoises could be infected as well, they have decided to give me one from a completely separate litter at another store.

I appreciate them taking full responsibility, and I will post another update once the exchange is complete. If there’s anything you guys think I should look for before taking the new tort home please let me know! I will also be asking the pet store to give me new litter to make sure there is no cross contamination.

Does this mean you’ll be giving the other little one back.? I feel so bad. What’s going to happen to him next? Do they destroy him ?
Can’t you get another one for free and yet keep this one too in a different enclosure? Poor little guy what a crappy Fate..
We don’t give back human babies if they come out wonky..? ???

I would get your money back and get urself a well started baby from one of the breeders on here... also id get rid of any of the supplies u have in the enclosure the sick tort was in to be safe. Good luck! And sorry u had to go thru this experience.
I’m going to go ahead and receive a new tortoise from their other store. I’m definitely going to be looking any signs of lesions or unnatural behavior. They have been very helpful and I know they are ready to compensate for any issues I have. If I still have problems then I will try to get my money back and go to a trusted breeder. I don’t want to have to get all new things in the current environment but i don’t really have a choice at this point.

Thank you for the welcome! Everyone has been so helpful on here, and as a new owner this has been so informative. It sucks having to go through this right off the bat, but I’m glad to learn from the experience and know what to look for in the future. I will be saving up some side cash to get the new tort to the vet and get him looked at. And is there no way to disinfect anything in the enclosure? Or do I need to just get rid of everything?

Well, you have to get rid of the water bowl anyway. Bleach doesn’t work on cryptosporidium if Tom is right (wouldn’t bet against him). You can try to boil everything for several minutes. Just pouring boiling water on your enclosure probably won’t work. Peroxide might work as crypto has no peroxidase. Personally I would get rid of everything and save yourself some heartache.

What happened at the pet shop? Did you go?
UPDATE!!!
So I took my tortoise back to the pet shop. They examined him and said the yellow lump was probably from the other tortoises biting each other or something else could have cut his neck. They took a pair of tweezers and pulled the yellow spot out of his neck. It all came out in one go, I was surprised at how big it was. He seems to be fine and I was able to take him back home. They said if I find anymore of those I could take him back and they’d pull them out for me. I’m still planning on taking him to the vet for an exam.

thank you to everyone who was kind enough to help and give me advise!

That lesion might be a secondary infection. I had several of those lesions come and go during my bout with crypto. That it came off is irrelevant. This tortoise is infected with something.

You must do what your conscience dictates, but I'd take that one back, get a refund, and buy from a breeder who starts babies correctly and doesn't have any tell tale lesions on their babies.

I house multiple babies together all the time. They don't bite each other and if they did, it wouldn't leave a lesion like that.

Also be aware that vets know little to nothing about tortoises and tortoise care. There is no semester on tortoise husbandry in vet school. Most of them do more harm than good. Don't let the vet do any "vitamin injections". All the ones who know nothing seem to suggest this. Your baby doesn't need it and their little bodies can't handle it.

For disinfection, a 10% ammonia solution is the only thing I know of that will kill crypto.

@Elizabeth VanGurp Is there an update? How is your little one? What did the vet say? Did you see any more yellow bumps?

Sorry for all the questions. We've been seeing more threads about yellow bumps in baby sulcatas since you last posted, and I was curious. :)
