Thank you! I'm really glad I found this place before adopting my tortoise :)
That is the proper way to do it. Research first, so many of us bought a tort first. When asking Google questions the tortoise forum came up first often. I quit surfing the web and kept with TFO. I can say that the care I was giving Opo was all wrong. TFO got me on the right track. I am sure it kept Opo from getting sick or worse. I can say Opo is a happy tort.

I'm sure Opo is a very happy tort :) . I can honestly say just what I've learned today has shown me how much I need to learn about owning a tortoise. If I would have went straight to a big retailer and adopted a tortoise I know I would have been doing it wrong. I definitely "stumbled" upon this forum, but now I'm glad I did.

Hey Kentucky...what kind of tortoise you thinkin about?
Hi! From what I've read I was originally considering a Russian tortoise. But @Ink mentioned Hermann tortoises, so now I'm looking at those too. I'm really open to any tort that is good for beginners and would do well where I live :)

I probably won't be joining in much on the car talk. All I really know about them is they go vroom vroom and get me places ?

Welcome to the forum. Good to see someone doing their homework beforehand. Have you considered Redfoots? They require a little more humidity than Russians or Hermann torts but could be done in Kentucky. They're probably the easiest when it comes to diet, they can eat almost anything.

Those are some handsome torts! I hadn't considered one of those, but I'm going to do some more research about them now. The main thing I noticed is that they average around 12 inches as adults. The indoor habitat I'm going to build will be around 7ft by 4ft. Would that be too small? Outdoor space will definitely be bigger, but I just worry about in the winter.

Hi everyone!

My name is Michael and I'm brand new to the world of tortoises. I'm literally a stage 0 person because I don't currently have a tortoise and have never owned one in the past. I do love tortoises though and just haven't really been in a position to adopt one until now. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and tap into your knowledge as I begin this journey.

I came across this forum as I was looking for reputable breeders and decided to stay because the community seems wonderful! Everything I've read so far says that starting out with a Russian tortoise is best way to go, so that's what I'm looking into. I have a lot to learn and I know being a part of this community will be a big help. I want to make sure my eventual tortoise pal has the best life possible and they're just as happy to be with me as I am with them.

Anyways, I'm sure I'll interact with a lot of you as I go throughout this journey and hopefully one day I can give back by sharing what I've learned with new people.

Thanks for reading! :)
Welcome to the forum!

7x4 would be a little small for an adult Redfoot. That would probably more suitable for a small tort.
