Hi,

I have never hibernated my tortoise Halloumi. She is 3, to be 4 this year. I just did the Jackson ratio and appears she may be underweight.

It is a much debated topic but do I really need to hibernate my tortoise? With better knowledge I will hibernate her this year.

Disregard the silly ratios. Weigh YOUR tortoise and look for a steady increase in a young one, or look for it to remain relatively steady in a fully grown tortoise. Your tootsie should feel heavy and dense for its size. If it does, then you are good. If your tortoise feels light and hollow, then you might have an issue.

You do not have to hibernate ever. You can keep her up every year if you want to. I think you should hibernate her next fall and through winter, but you don't have to if you don't want to.

If you decide you want to, lets talk about it in September. No sense explaining everything now.

Thanks for the advice! I’ve always thought my tort is quite heavy for her little size (470g today).

I will come back heading towards the end of year for advice - thank you!

Oh no, don't go away. Welcome to the forum. You'll find lots of interesting conversations, topics & up-to-date care & feeding info & some silly stuff, too.

We love photos! Send us some of your tort!!
