We have a 2 year old red footed tortoise in a vivarium. We put some live plants in there, which did wonders for the humidity. However, she ate the succulents, and the geranium died. What plants a) are not poisonous b) suit a humid tropical environment and c) won't get eaten? I don't mind her eating live plants but it's going to work out expensive if I have to keep replacing them!

Greetings...I’m assuming Brixham, UK...

yes, you’ve found out first hand that feeding house plants is an expensive way to go.

Check out getting & growing some Pothos. These can be easily propagated and also hung in small hanging baskets in your viv.

I've been told that Pothos are difficult to find outside of the U.S.

Etsy UK has lots of pothos just seems a we bit pricier than the US. I bought a fresh from the greenhouse MONSTER basket hanger that had to weigh 8 pounds. I have split a chunk off and it is happily taking over my enclosure. I use a heavy pot to keep it above the tort then suspended wire fence from the pot to side of the enclosure. The pothos grew over and a plant tunnel was created. My leopard sleeps under it now rather than in his hide.

In Florida they are an actual invasive species to be had for free.
They grow almost everywhere with leaves over 20" wide Jurassic Park style.
A great tortoise safe plant. Needs no special care. And they are low light and low water tolerant

I'm in the UK and I use pothos. I also made a wire bridge for it to grow over. Boston fern is good too, and I've never seen Nitro eating it so mine has grown really well.

This is the only plant I've had survive in my red foot's enclosure. It's on a side that she doesn't frequent, but you can see she's still bulldozed it. (The pothos to the left is fake)

The ironic part is that fly traps are native to where I live now, but I bought this in Oklahoma ? I honestly didn't think it would survive long, it was in rough shape. Now I'm considering giving it a name. The enclosure had some gnats at the beginning of the year and it ate like a king.

I'm about to move, but I plan to try bromeliads again once the dust is settled. I think they could survive a larger enclosure.
