I have been reading this website nearly everyday for the last two years. I have an eight year old Horsfield who is currently in hibernation, and a three year old Hermans. They have an 8ft by 4ft enclosure each in my spare room, luckily we have a big spare room, and Tommy my Horsfield has a large outside run and we are working on an outside run for Lucky ready for 2022. About three years ago I managed to freeze Tommy when he was in hibernation (the thermometer went wrong and I keep turning the temperature down). One morning I got up and checked Tommy to find him frozen, I put him on a soft cloth on the radiator while I went on Google to see what I could do and if he would ever recover, and read a lot about how they never recover - one person put on that she put her tortoise in the tortoise table until she could bury him and when she went to get him several hours later he was alive although a bit poorly. So I put the lights on in his table and wrapped him loosely in some kitchen roll under the lights.

every couple of hours I went up and tickled his foot to see if he reacted - and he didnt, until about 8pm at night then I thought I saw him move. I picked him up and took him downstairs and said to my husband ‘please look and tell me i’m not imagining things, and I tickled him again and my husband said he moved his head then. I was so happy, he had a few problems, his back legs didn’t work and his underside of the shell felt a bit squishy, but after a couple of days he started eating and from then on I massaged his legs about four times a day, I had a vet check out his shell, and he moved forward slowly.

after about nine months you wouldn’t know there was anything wrong with him, he is perfect. After reading this website, I have changed the lamps from MVB to flood basking bulbs, I dint use any other bulbs only a normal one for extra light as I get them out in the sun every day that I can.
there now you know something about me, I will keep reading all the information on this site.

Thank you everyone for welcoming me, I will post a picture of Lucky my Hermann’s as soon as I work out how. As I said Tommy is in hibernation this year, he really went off his food and was hiding and sleeping all day so I decided to put him into hibernation. Needless to say I am checking him every week, I am checking the temperature in the fridge several times a day and I am taking him out once a week to weigh him. This far everything is going well, just keep fingers crossed.

Hi and welcome,
That was a great save and I'm glad he recovered well. Torts are amazing creatures and it saddens me to think that many thought to have died may have been buried too quickly and alive. It's usually advised to keep them warm and wait a day or two because there have need incredible stories of torts recovering from a death like state.
This is the best forum you'll find for up to date advice on all tort related matters and we love pictures so we'll look forward to hearing more about your torts. Happy Birthday!
