Horse field tortoise

I have just bought a horse field tortoise between 6montha to a year had it 2 weeks now and it seems to be sleeping all the time is this normal ? Have a Mercury basking light uvb and heat has plenty of room but tends to be in the end shaded part all day

Around this time of year they want to brumate/hibernate.

MVB (mercury vapor bulb) can be too harsh--i made the same mistake! It can burn too hot, too bright, and dry out their shells and skin. Once I got rid of mine, Morla was much more active around her enclosure. (I use a UVB fluorescent tube light for UVB during the day, and a regular bulb basking light [for heat during the day], and a CHE [ceramic heating element] for night.)

Greetings. Are you using a viv or an open top enclosure? How are you maintaining the ambient temp in the enclosure? Where/how are you measuring temps? How long are you keeping your lights for? This dark cold time of the year torts want to brumate.

- Guisborough is in the UK, right? Cold, dark, blustery time of the year
