Long story short:
I have a tiny and neurotic female Chihuahua named Tsuki.
She is very sweet and very odd. For example she will only drink water if someone is holding the bowl in their hand. And if two ceramic bowls touch each other, that klinking sound will make her run away. I use ceramic because the metal bowls also frightened her.
She has always had issues with food. And it took me a long time to find something that she would eat without issue. It is NUTRO ULTRA CHICKEN PATE. (She must eat small, soft food because of an inbred condition affecting her teeth and jaw.)
About 1.5 years ago. This food disappeared off the local shelves. Off of CHEWY.COM and off of Amazon.
I began "making her own food every 2 weeks. Freezing it and giving her a portion each day. Defrosted and warmed.
It is 1/4 bag of shredded carrots, 1/2 pound of ground turkey. 1/2 pound of ground chicken and one packet of the good old Nutro that I've been able to find at a Filet Mignon price. I ad it because she likes it and I'm worried a bit about missing some trace elements.
Some times I ad a few ground up green beans. Some kale. Etc. But this is the basic makeup of the food.
She loves it. She spins in circles as I'm placing it in her bowl.
I know that she will eat it and she has remained healthy and her weight is maintained.
The Nutro may become more available but I feel good about making sure that she is eating fresh, real food for the most part. So I'm going to keep doing things this way for now.

Have you ever tried the dog food they keep in the store's fridge?

I split a cooked scrambled egg amongst my 3 dogs, and plain yogurt, about a teaspoon each. They eat regular dry dog food but they really like it. I also garnish with carrots.

Tsuki can't chew up dry food and she'll choke in it if I feed it.
It's a shame. Because she likes a few of the tiny dog breed kibble choices. I've had to grind it up and then mix it in with the pate in the past.

Should I ad something like egg yolk? It'd be easy to do. I boil eggs pretty regularly

Sure cooked eggs only and a small amount of yogurt if you want. I use non fat plain Greek yogurt, one small cup lasts 4 days with Three dogs. I use the egg yolk. I just scrambled the entire inside egg. Just a small amount is great. To much is bad. My opinion I am not an expert

When I was much younger and had a really small dog she was a really finicky eater. She liked an egg though no matter how you cooked it. She was a Manchester toy terrier.

This is an Apple head tea cup Chihuahua.
She's not very smart. But she makes up for that in cuteness

My two rescue Jamaica Mongrel Dawgs prefer the stuff I cook for them by far, rather than any kind of store bought dog food. I boil rice with carrot and pumpkin and chicken and they love it and are healthy.

My nephew Ben (a mini Schnauser) also suffers from bowl trauma. He will only eat his dry food if you put a pile of it on the floor & sit with him while he eats. Fortunately he doesn't have the digestive problems & is not a picky eater. But he doesn't stop barking until the ritual begins when he's hungry.

I wish I had a Mini Schnauzer for a nephew.😏

I am fortunate that we have a really good holistic dog/cat pet store near us...they have a website that can help...and you can always call in ... they have a good collection of raw food ... given what you wrote Weruva, Rawz, or Primal would work ... hope it helps..... https://www.dogsandcatsrule.com/#/home

I feed my dogs mostly on kibble, a rotation of 4 good ones with slightly different ingredients and primary proteins, and supplement with some of the elements you mentioned, along with a few others:
  • raw chicken wings
  • raw carrots
  • Raw eggs
  • kefir (a drinkable yogurt analog)
  • a bit of raw kale or broccoli

Our dogs eat kibble and left overs. But one of them will do just about anything to score an egg - any way it comes! The other dog prefers cheese over everything.

We used to have a dog that loved cashews. She could sniff them out anywhere in the house. LOL

An update:
As time moves on, so does Tsukis preference for certain foods.
Right now it's chicken, turkey, carrots and green beans. She has decided that she no longer likes the beef/chicken or the beef/turkey I've made previously.
Luckily she will eat a serving of actual wet dog food once in a while now.
And she used to only drink water if I'm holding the bowl. Now she'll also drink if my wife holds the bowl. So that's good.
