Hello,

I have quite a few extra babies this year and am looking to give away a hatchling Burmese Star Tortoise to someone who normally could not afford one. The caveat is the person receiving the tortoise must have a closed chamber style cage ready and the knowledge on how to care for the tortoise. Also, please be over 18. You have a month to get ready so there is no rush.

I will require photos of the enclosure. I can provide a supply of seeds to plant, spineless cactus and mazuri diet.

I plan to ship around the beginning of July to allow it to grow to about 40-50 grams. I will cover the shipping.

If anyone is interested please direct message me, as I do not have the time to keep checking this thread.

If you already own other expensive tortoises, please do not message me. With hard times coming, there are people that cannot afford an expensive cage and an expensive tortoise. This is for them.

Super generous of you Meg. Admirable and respectable. I would love to see more people with this species as they are so perfect in so many ways.

Hi Tom! I have read so many of your articles (posts) over the years about keeping at the time Sulcatas in closed chambered enclosures. I still send people your original thread on here when trying to explain closed chambers. Thanks for that.

You are welcome! Do you have the updated thread:

I love what you are doing here. I may have to copy cat your idea. I think it is a wonderful thing to do.

I told my co-worker and cousin about it, they seem really interested. I also told them that if it doesn’t work out they can always give it to me 😂 😂

Hi Meg, we'd love to be a candidate for one of your hatchlings. We've been preparing our enclosure, sourcing coco coir, and supplies/equipment. We have ruled out the Sulcata due to their large adult size. We're on over 1 acre for plenty of outdoor food planting and sun! I'll send over pics of the enclosure and details. Happy to help with shipping cost as well.

I’ve been doing this for several years with Russians, Hermann’s, and box turtles. I started doing it with CA Wood and painted turtles last year and will continue that this year.
I get that some folks need to sell hatchlings to cover costs, and some produce enough that if they gave them all away the market would suffer. But I’m not in that boat, so I really enjoy being able to do it. This year I am hoping to add northern and concentric diamondback terrapins, and spengleri. I’ve got eggs cooking from both.
I was lucky enough to be gifted a radiata hatchling and if I’m lucky enough to get another and end up with a pair, I’d love to do that with them. I’m raising up a few Egyptians and G. Japonica and hope to do it with those.
I would definitely consider doing this. I find it very rewarding and you get to know some amazing folks.

Hi Meg. I have always wanted a Burmese star but can’t afford the price tag of these beauties. I have a setup ready for a baby and was trying to save money for a hatchling. Please let me know if you have any babies left. I would love to enjoy one for many years to come. I am very experienced with tortoises and have all needs for humidity and heat covered. I am only missing a tortoise now🙂. Thank you for your consideration! Jeannie

Hello again. I do have a picture of the enclosure setup. Do I email it to you? I can’t figure out how to attach a pic to this thread.

This is really nice of you and anyone else that does this. I just hope you do your home work and digging deep to be sure who you are sending them to is not a tortoise/turtle flipper.
I’ve always done well in finding the right people for whatever I’m gifting. It is absolutely important to vet them, I agree. Maybe I’m good at reading people, but I can generally tell if someone is who they say.

Foggers are okay in the room, but should not blow directly into a tortoise enclosure. If you can't find one for free, I have lots of them for sale. Dozens. Literally.

If you successfully breed japonica then I hope you send offspring to someone who has a group of them or is building a group. That species is endangered and insanely rare here in the states. But you already know that if you have adults :)
