Dearest Zola,
Teztez is rather anxious, she has been worrying that she doesn't know which day is yours and Angie's birthday.
We want to wish you both a very happy day and hope you have a lovely walk or car ride and delicious things to eat.
love from Lady Teztez and Ruthxxx
Dear and precious friend Teztez, our birthdays are on Friday - we may be going to Torquay , in which case my mama and papa will no doubt be having fish and chips from Hanburys in Babbacombe, and will sit on a bench overlooking the sea to eat it. But my papa doesn't feel very well today, and it's a long way for him to drive. Also, the weather is rather variable. So we may go to look at the sea at Bude, as we often do, and postpone the Torquay trip.I don't really mind - life is always fun for me !!
Love from your faithful admirer Zola and Angie xxxx

Thank you Zola, i will pass the message on to her ladyship.
That sounds a simply splendid programme and we do sincerely hope that your Papa and Mama are both well enough to carry it out to everyone's delectation.
Bude sounds lovely also. Have never been there, sadly. maybe one day..
Teztez is going to have an exciting interlude in her calm well ordered existence.
I have been rather reluctant to break it to her, but we hope to visit our daughter who lives in France next week (British Airways permitting) and she is going to spend a week with friends who love animals and are very good with them.
After her previous escape it doesn't seem fair to ask local family to have the fear of her making a break for home again. It was such a nightmare for them.
Much love to you all
Lady Teztez and Ruth xxx
Please think of us brushing up our French!
Teztez was astonished to learn that there are so very many languages in which the name "tortoise" is included.
it shows how affectionately every nation on Earth holds the noble species!

Hello Ruth - I do hope you will have a lovely time in France. My brother and his wife live there, but I don't think we will ever manage to visit them, because of Zola. We couldn't entrust him to anyone else - he is not as independent as Teztez, and we would feel very guilty - and miss him too much. We did actually leave him with our friend Joy, who had a tortoise sanctuary near St Austell,a very long time ago, so we could stay in a caravan in the New Forest for several days - it rained nearly all the time, and we did miss him a lot - we came back early - he had been having a great time there with Joy, but seemed glad to see us again. Joy, who ran the sanctuary, had all sorts of tortoises, and for our birthday, I would make a cake which we would take there, as well as various food treats for the tortoises, and have a little party with Joy, her partner, her mum and any visitors to the sanctuary who happened to be around. She had some sulcatas, including Zeus - a great big chap who I really loved, and who let me feed him fresh-picksd sweetcorn by hand. The sanctuary closed several years ago, though.
We shall look forward to hearing about your holiday - where about does your daughter live ?
Have a great time - and I hope Teztez will behave!

Happy Birthdays Angie and Zola!
Wishing you both a very enjoyable day.

Hello dear Ruth - I have been wondering whether you are back from France yet - and of course, how the lovely Lady Teztez coped with her holiday with your friends. I hope all went well -I wonder if you got to see the Tour de France at all. We are watching it every day. I hope the weather has been ok for you.

Bon soiree chere Angie et Zola le magnifique!!

We thought of you! We did indeed see a little bit of the Tour de France as on Saturday it came past our son-in-law's work place so we walked down a farm track and watched the whole thing go by from a field beside the road. it was crazy!! the French don't care a bit about standing in the road and its a wonder no-one was run over or squashed! the advertising and support cars and motorbikes came through, horns and klaxons blaring and tooting , carving a passage through the happy crowds. and eventually we heard cheers and saw much waving and the first group of bikes came through; we cheered and cheered..it was an amazing sight. i looked out for Zola just in case he was making a guest appearance but i expect he was advising privately through someone's headphones. there were three groups of cyclists and we cheered and shouted for everyone , especially the last few toiling along in the glorious sunshine. it was truly amazing!!
We had a wonderful visit, we were taken to see the Alpes and spent the night in a ski cabin up in the mountains then visited Chamonix next day. Truly awesome.
We were taken to the south and did some wine tasting and bought some wine to bring home.
It was very hot indeed in the south and we heard the cicadas chirping away and paddled in a river that was at least 30 degrees warm!!
Part of owning tortoises is seeing delicious looking plants and weeds that you know they would love, but sadly Teztez wasn't with us.
She thoroughly enjoyed her stay with friends however; she spent each night in the children's bedrooms, taking turns between them. She hasnt told me much yet about it but seems to have had a marvellous time, eating treats and having lots of shell stroking and loving attention. she did accidentally nip the youngest child's finger while eating soggies but she was very sorry.
Now she is home and was surprised to find herself back in her familiar garden. she sat and gazed around for quite a while, then hurried off to hide.
i still haven't unpacked properly as I'm still in denial that we are home but i must set about it sensibly.
its lovely to have Teztez back and the beans are climbing up their sticks and the hollyhocks are blooming and the swifts are still here so its all good.
Thank you dearest Angie and Zola for your kind wishes. we often thought of you and Teztez has been longing to catch up with Zola again.
Hope you were able to enjoy the sunny weather without feeling too oppressed.
much love from Teztez and Ruthxxx

Hello, dear Ruth , from me and Angie. We really loved your description of the TDF -once, many years ago, before they were lucky enough to meet me, my mama and papa drove on some of those twisty little roads up mountains - it was very exciting ! I shall never get to France, because I'm not allowed a passport - silly, isn't it, when ferrets are allowed in ! I hope the lovely Lady Teztez has settled back in again, and I'm very glad she was looked after well, and treated with suitable respect.
My mama is very wobbly today, but she will write more tomorrow.
Just one good news - the house building next door is nearly finished - they have taken away the Portaloo from on the verge outside our house !!!

Dear and deeply admired :Lady Teztez - I am so delighted that you have returned to the care of your trusted retainer - and I am sure she was overjoyed to see your distinguished and adorable self once again. In your absence, we have had very little of interest to report, except for the two houses being built next door being nearly completed. There have been several very noisy days - ground vibrations rattling things in the kitchen as they "landscape" the gardens, etc - but we hope it will soon be over. I can't have the windows in my conservatory open because of the noise - luckily, our garden has got rather overgrown, so I don't see the workmen - but it isn't very pleasant when one's floor starts vibrating.
However, I have at least been able to go out with my papa quite a bit - two days ago, we met a group of youngish girls who were delighted to meet me, and my Papa said that I was a Tortoise Ambassador - one girl said "ooh, an ambassador !!! We should get your autograph !!!" Only they were wearing wet-suits, so they had nothing to write with. Then, another day, we met a rather posh-sounding lady, who chatted with my papa for a bit, when she said " I think he's going to have a poo ! " - and when my papa explained it was my willy she could see, she laughed and said " Perhaps he's pleased to see me !!
I hope, dear Lady, that all is well with you, and that your charming retainer is well also, after her travels.
With the greatest respect and admiration

Dear and magnificent Zola,
You really do make my retainer laugh! I don't know what you've been saying to her!!
I am glad to hear that your next door building works are coming to an end, as I can totally sympathise about the noise, shaking and dust.
We too have been enduring building work, and currently they are doing water engineering because all the excavations have disturbed the levels and there is a spring which comes up under our house and this is now causing flooding on their site. In all fairness, they are very helpful and courteous to us, but the dust and dirt that flies into our house is very noticeable and my retainer despairs sometimes as surfaces get dusty straight after cleaning.
I hope that everything is peaceful again for you soon. How are your tomato plants doing? You are an amazing horticultural tortoise to add to your other talents.
I am sorry to say that my poor Papa has covid!! For the first time ever. He must have picked it up at Heathrow or on the plane coming back from Lyon.
He isn't too bad, just annoyed at wasting time as he has a lot of Signage work to be getting on with. My retainer is nursing him carefully. I hope your dear Mama is feeling better.
I have been hearing about charming St Agreve in the Ardeche where my papa and Mama's daughter lives. Apparently it's quite high up, 1000m the same as Snowdon!! The altitude made them feel sleepy! They enjoyed eating French food and especially the wine and had a lit of journeys on the twisting mountain roads that you mentioned. Their son-in-law is an enthusiastic driver and my retainer's bottom felt quite bumped with all the whirling and vrooming around! But of course she thoroughly enjoyed everything.
I am very impressed with your continuing ambassadorial work !
If only you could help with the new government leadership contest. I feel sure your support would be very valuable.
With best wishes from Teztez, cosily tucked up in my hut and Ruth, (getting the tea)

Greetings dear and most treasured Teztez. I trust that you are having a pleasant and restful day. I am so sorry your Papa is suffering from Covid, and hope he will soon feel better. I am lucky that my parents haven't caught it - we don't find ourselves in large groups of people very often, and when we do, it is always outside, which no doubt helps. My tomato plants are growing well - there are 3 of them, on a table by the window, and they have now grown up to the ceiling. The top bits are now inextricably entwined with my fairy lights going across the window, but I don't think the bulbs will get eaten by mistake ! The tomatoes so far are very small, but a few more ripen each day. I had a walk with my papa again today, but ,strangely, there were very few people around, despite the large amounts of traffic getting into Bude. Maybe a sink-hole has opened up in the town somewhere !! My mama has been looking up where you stayed in France, and she says the scenery is amazing - worth getting a bruised bottom for !
With respect and admiration, dear Teztez, and to your loyal retainer, I wish you goodnight

Dear and much admired friend, I tried to send a reply to your devoted retainer, but somehow my mama messed things up on the computer, and it just vanished, except for the last line - so she is going to summarise what I said previously, and try again.
First, we are very sorry your Papa has Covid , and hope he gets better quickly. Luckily, my mama and papa avoid groups of people both indoors and outside, which obviously your papa couldn't do - I hope your dear retainer will not start showing symptoms, too.
My mama has been looking up where you went in France, and it seems a really beautiful area - worth getting a bruised bottom to see!
I went out with my papa today, and there were huge traffic jams getting into Bude, but no-one visible on the coastal path -maybe a large sink-hole has opened up, and all the people have fallen in!
As I have already said goodnight, I will just sign my name

My esteemed friend,
We were able to read the kind message that your Mama sent. How very strange about the disappearing grockles (the name for tourists in Bournemouth from back in the day when my Mama lived there)
Perhaps they got stuck in a carpark.
My papa is convalescent so not very happy I'm afraid, he is at a great disadvantage in not having a tortoise's phlegmatic view.
Our kitchen taps have gone wrong so he is rebuilding them and sending my mama off to get various parts. I will have to have my bathwater heated in a kettle.
I was offered some blackberries yesterday but they didn't really appeal.
I am glad that your dear papa and mama do not have this horrid lurgy, it really is not nice.
With much love and fondest regards from your friend Teztez xxx

Dear and treasured friend - I am so sorry your papa is still unwell, and I try to ensure my mama and papa don't get it, by remaining inconspicuous as much as possible when out with them,to avoid encouraging strangers to approach us - of course, I do need to be in full view at times, so that I can look out across the sea, and so on.
I have 3 tomato plants in my conservatory, on a low table by the window, and they are so tall they are inextricably entwined with my fairy lights which go across under the roof.( There are 3 different strands of lights, and we put them on at night while watching tv - they look very pretty, as they reflect in the windows all round my conservatory.)
Anyway, there have been quite a few tomatoes so far, but they are special small ones, so not much in weight.
I also have 2 mini roses, which have some new buds. And outside the windows, there is a jungle of ferns, brambles. and more roses, so I have an interesting view, even looking up from the floor.
Are you interested in music,Teztez ? I have always liked the Rolling Stones -we watched a a programme about them last night, and I quite enjoyed it - I didn't mind the music being loud - I soon let my mama know if I think the sound is too loud - and also she covers my head a bit. I don't like the sound of hail on the roof of my conservatory at all !
I hope your papa feels better soon, so your delightful and caring retainer can devote herself properly to you, as is her main duty.

Dear Ruth - I hope your husband is feeling a bit better now, and that you haven't got any symptoms yourself - I think Teztez needs to be extra co-operative with you, so as not to cause any added stress.

Dear Angie and Zola,
Thank you for your kind concern about my papa and mama. I am sorry to report that they are both now victims of this unpleasant virus. I have been told that I am in charge and am having to be very responsible, guarding the premises and coping with any emergencies which may occur.
I am keeping calm and regarding everything watchfully from my hut headquarters.
Also providing comfort and solace by my reassuring presence.
Your conservatory sounds a delightful kingdom with your treasured plants and romantic lighting and rock and roll sound!
You are very wise to avoid crowds of people, however well meaning.
We all hope that you will all remain well and safe.
With respectful and fond best wishes and love from Teztez and Ruth xxx

Dear and wonderful Teztez - I am so glad that you are in charge of your poor mama and papa - their minds must be much easier knowing you will deal with everything. My mama and papa send them all best wishes, and so do I of course. I am extremely glad that no Covid infection has crossed our threshold yet, but at least I shall have your experience to rely on, if that should happen.
I have not had a very interesting time recently - today my mama had to go to the dentist - how glad I am not to have teeth !! I then went for a walk in the afternoon with my papa - it is rather nice being accosted by people calling "Hello Zola " - and it happens a lot, of course. One of my favourite times was when a whole group of little children ran down a grass bank, shouting out "Zola, Zola, Zola " very loudly !!
I do hope your mama and papa are beginning to feel better now - possibly you could encourage them with a bowl of soggies, if they are feeling rather weak.
Take care of your precious self, dear Lady, and don't over-tax your own self with your extra duties.
With admiration, and deepest regards from Zola (and Angie too ) xxx

Dear and most revered Teztez - my mama and I hope your unfortunate retainer and her husband are recovering under your care , and that you are not too exhausted with supervising them and attending to their needs. I am sure they will be so grateful to you. Have you tried them with the soggies yet ?

Dear friend Teztez - I have just come back from a very long walk by the sea, with my papa, and we met a small group of people who saw me, and wanted to look properly - my papa asked what their own language was, and they said Ukrainian - so he held me up and said "chiripakha ' - which is their word for tortoise -they were very surprised and pleased. A bit later, he met another group, who said they were Vietnamese - he said "guonshah "or something like that, and it was their language - again, they were so pleased, especially an old lady . Then he met a third group, who were Russian, and the same thing happened. It was really lovely to make all those people feel happy ! My papa has a good memory for words, and we have learned over 40 from different people over the years who have met me.
I hope your poor invalids are recovering. I'm sure your charming face looking at them hopefully will encourage and help them.
Your friend always

Dear and treasured friend Teztez - I do hope your retainer is making good progress in your care - it must be very strange for you, being the carer rather than the cared-for person. But I am sure you will be a very good nurse.
It is very hot here at the moment, though not as bad as some other places - we are going to Barnstaple to get some more radicchio tomorrow, and my mama is looking forward to sitting in the car with the air-conditioning on. We have some photos to give the lady at the shop, who is very helpful making sure we get the radicchio safely - my papa took some photos of her with me , last time, and we got them printed. I think she is very proud when another customer comes in when she is holding me !
Your devoted friend
