Hi everyone! We’re in Tampa and recently got our first sulcata hatchling, Tortoisaurus. I’m learning a lot here and look forward to getting to know everyone (and how to navigate the forum!!) I never know if I’m supposed to start a new thread and risk double-posting, or to jump into another thread and risk “piggy backing.” 😬 so please bear with me as I learn.

I look forward to connecting with locals and other folks who can help me navigate this whole thing! I’ve never had an animal that will just keep eating like Tortoisaurus (the others I have just stop when they’ve had enough) so I think that will be my biggest challenge is to not overfeed! And making sure she doesn’t hurt herself - She digs little holes and mounds in her coco coir substrate and then flips herself over crawling up the hills she creates…. so I had to get a camera!

Anyway, thanks for reading! Have a good one!

Hi and welcome,
We have a few Florida members with sullies.
There is a lot of old incorrect information about tort care still being passed on, so this the up to date care sheet you need it covers everything from best enclosure and substrate to diet and temps etc. - if you follow that your new baby should thrive.
If you post pics of your set up you'll get good feedback to make sure your baby is as safe as possible. Most of us have had to make changes because we were given outdated advice.

I was told to think of a tort shell as an upturned bowl and feed that amount first but if they want more - feed more - they are grazers so may return for food several times during their day. They usually stop eating when they've had enough

Thank you so much Lyn!! This is so incredibly helpful right to have at my fingertips! Luckily being in Florida and it being humid/rainy season it’s allowed me to have a few different housing options; one covered run outside with both sun and shade options, and a smaller one for indoors if it’s raining heavily or for when it gets cold. Definitely need to work on tweaking the indoor one now that I know the open-table isn’t the best option, But luckily we’ve got some time since Florida is on point with the perfect temps and humidity levels right now! We will post some pictures tomorrow! 🥰

Thank you! I feel silly even asking but it’s been about 12 years since I’ve used a similar type of platform and I forgot the etiquette a bit! :)

Don't feel silly. We all have to learn these things. If you ever think you did something wrong, just contact a mod and they can fix it for you.
