(Clemmys guttata) Male or female? At what age or size is it 100% ?

Hey everyone I think I have a female what do u guys think?

At what age should I provide a nesting area?

It looks like a female at this time.

Males have a dark upper beak and females have a pinkish to orangey upper beak, which is what I am looking at more than the plastron and tail pics. A male's upper beak would be much darker than that of your tortoise, but it may still be too young for it to have turned darker yet.

It is a bit small to be sure, but as @zovick mentions, it is looking female. But most do at this size. by next year if it is male a dark face will develop. By 3" ( 77mm), You sometimes can get the black face, but not always. By 8.5cm you should be able to tell for sure. Yours is young as well for its size - so that could be another reason to wait and see on the sex.

You should see lots of breeding activity as a notice to provide nesting areas. They do prefer to nest in amongst plants. I use lots of creeping jenny and they like to bury in the ground cover when nesting.

nothing i can add to the sexing thing , but you sure did a good job raising that turtle, everything about her/him in the pics exudes health ......
