If you look at my first post thread on here you will see that a family member lost my precious tortoise in late June. Now that it is November and closer to thanksgiving I’m absolutely terrified.
I hate the dark now and I hate the fact that it’s getting colder,All I can think about is my tortoise and it’s making me very upset and extremely depressed.
I’m holding on to some sort of hope that I will find him because if I don’t I honestly don’t know what I’ll do with myself. He was really the only thing that made me actually happy. I had a huge breakdown last night and I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.I need some hope.I’m not even sure if it’s too late to find him since it’s been like 5ish months…

Tips would be appreciated, maybe even success stories.I just need some hope.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I have no doubt that your tortoise's instincts kicked in and he will try and hunker down for the season. There are so many variables to consider here. Looking on the bright side, YES, there is a chance that your tortoise dug down deep enough, in a space safe enough for him to make it through. Fingers crossed.

My friend lost her Russian tortoise about 2 years ago. We were watching him scratch at the walls of his enclosure and I kept thinking to myself...I bet he can get out. We walked away to look at her Eagles and when we went back to get him, he was gone. He had in fact climbed over the wall of his enclosure and was now loose on her 3 acre property. Still no sign of him. Quite often, you don't see them again.

His instinct is to dig down deep enough to be protected.

Not sure where in MA you live, but I lived in Sharon, CT for 30 years. Sharon is in northwestern CT, 20 miles south of Great Barrington, MA, up in the CT mountains and it gets really cold there, much colder than eastern MA, the Cape, or anywhere on the shoreline of either state.

The point is that one of my friends from northwestern CT lost a Russian Tortoise and could not find it anywhere. Three years later, the tortoise was found emerging from a burrow under the stone wall in front of their house. It had survived two winters with many, many days of below freezing temperatures, some of which were below zero.

So don't give up hope! You may find your tortoise in the spring, or even on a nice warm day in the late fall of this year.

Since he’s been out wandering about now for a few months, it has experienced the gradual cool down from Summer through Autumn to these cold days of November. Its natural instincts will have kicked in to dig in deeper & deeper to brumate over Winter. Much better than just losing him today & sub-freezing temps tonight. I’m guessing he’s honkered down until Spring.

He was lost in Wilmington MA,it’s freaking me out and honestly I’m extremely depressed because I grew up with this tortoise and if he was under my supervision at the time this wouldn’t of happened.I love him to pieces and in very scared I’ll never seem his again.

Hi Hailey,
We are also going through the sadness and anxiety of a lost tortoise, it is quite awful. If you would like a new tortoise I know a reputable breeder and would be happy to get one for you. Not to give up hope that Casey will return if you could manage two in that event. I hope that you're doing well!

Hello Larina,

That was a very kind offer you made. I don't know if you will get a response from Hailey M. or not, though, because she has not been on the TFO since Jan. 12, 2023 (the date when she entered the post to which you replied).

I noticed that and was sad to see it, I hope that she returns and is doing better.
