I haven't used a wooden viv for my tortoises but I have had several of them for my large snakes. I always painted the whole inside with a wooden deck sealant to protect the wood against the moisture and to keep it from absorbing it all.

i got them in June. they were a year old in July. i didnt get them from the best situation. they have doubled in size since i got them and their pyramiding is doing much much better now.
