Thinking this is a desert tortoise? I live in Tucson, Arizona. Was given this tortoise as someone found it and it appeared to have been domestic (purple markings on the shell). After a significant amount of time of not finding the owners I have taken over. Can we confirm it's a desert tortoise...

Oh, this makes me sad....that he/she seems to have had a rough life . I hope I can give it a happy place to rest and do normal turtle things. Any recommendations on diet? My desert tortoise eats the plants that naturally grow in my backyard, with some spring mix here and there. Shall I do this...

Is there other ways to identify his besides shell pattern? Should I treat it the same as my desert tortoise? Maybe a trip to a vet will help.

Oh my goodness, that does sound very cruel :(. Thanks for the information on his species. I did a google search on the desert box turtle but doesn't seem to look like the one we have. He has a significant amount of orange on his legs. I just want to know so I can ensure to take proper care of it!

Hopefully these are decent. FYI...we didnt put that "bread tie" on the turtle and am confused as to why its there? Do people do this to help identify them...seems to be glued on or something...

Where is it okay to post a picture of an unidentified tortoise for help? We found ourselves with this tortoise (long story) and dont exactly know what type it is? Maybe some sort of box tortoise? We own a sonoran desert tortoise and this one is significantly different. Thanks!!
