    Bad day... advice needed.

I'm so sorry to hear this, but glad that you stepped in and rescued him. You did everything you could have done for him.

    Redfoot health advice

Yeah, the water thing happens in the US too. Plus if you're buying local/organic, they're fertilizing with poop from some animal (as opposed to chemical fertilizers) so you have to wash it well anyways! I always wash it all very well for us and for her! I'm not sure about the canned kale...

    Redfoot health advice

She treats all produce with deep suspicion. Strawberries, banana, grapes, even mango- she inspects it, takes a bite or two, and then won't touch it. Kale (or other dark greens) was a staple of her diet before the move but I could not find it in Germany, not even at the commissary on base...

    Redfoot health advice

Thanks, yes, OK. I was leaning towards that too. There is a good tortoise vet about 2hrs from me by car. Just trying to balance the stress of 2hrs in a car, I suppose. I think food is better tasting here too! It's been 10+ years since I used a pelleted food, but I suppose I will...

    Redfoot health advice

Will it help to get a response if I post a picture of her? haha. Here she is all ready to travel on the plane. I had heat packs all in the insulation around her and the Continental employees refreshed them every 4hrs to keep her at 75F the whole trip. Having fun on NYE before we left...

Pet Store vs. Breeder vs. Pet Shelter

I do know that there are many tortoises who need homes out there. If you have a good vet to work with, you can do a lot of good for a rescue!

    Redfoot health advice

Hello, I have lurked here for a long time but need some advice on my redfoot. I have had Lois for 19 years. Recently, my husband's job moved us to Germany and Lois came with us. My vet back home (SEAVS in Washington, DC) said she may develop a URI from the general stress of travel and to be...

Horray! There's no way to compete with such a well taken photo and the cuteness of that baby. :)

    outdoor house of cedar

I would think that if you used multiple coats of polyurathene it would seal the aromatic oils in the wood and keep them from hurting your torts.

    Lois' New House

Well, there is a full spectrum light bulb for her but when I pluged it in the bulb exploded!! I'm in the process of getting a new one from Petsmart. This is the second light (Fleukers) that's exploded (the first one blew up when Lois was under it) and I DONT' want a replacement. They don't...

    Lois' New House

Yes, that's the ceramic heater that caused the trouble. I think I'm going to go to Lowes and try to get them to cut me a strip of that fiberglass stuff. Thanks1

    treating with baytril

It took Lois about 3 days worth of shots to start showing signs of getting better when she had her infection.

    humidity

I'll have to try that out! I've been misting the mulch with a spray bottle which is time consuming for me and annoying for Lois.

    Lois' New House

Here's the story. In all the years I've had Lois, the only time I've been satisfied with her house was when she was a baby and could live in her 60gal aquarium. Since then she's lived in everything from a cement mixing tub, to a kiddy pool, to a constructed wooden frame tortoise table, to...
