Purchasing wild caught vs. captive bred tortoises

Hi Michael, That is a controversial issue. I have a feeling you might not get many responses, though.. Why do people buy a wc tort? I think some do because they want to breed but don't want to wait 5-10 years. And some do because it's right there in front of their eyes and it is...

    reputable online dealer???

I don't know about Martins World Exotics, but I like seeing the animal before I purchase. Have you tried a reptile show? Check kingsnake.com. In the opening page, there is a list of reptile shows all over the country. You might find a show near you.

    Lighting Question

Hi, I use T-rex active UV/heat mercury vapour 100W, too. I used to use Zoomed 5.0 tube. I really like the T-rex bulb. Ever since I started using it, one of my tortoise who didn't eat much started eating much better. I know it's expensive, but it supposed to last for at least a few years...

    hay look at Pio

Terry, I want to ask some questions about Pio's enclosure, because it just looks so great!! After Pio eats the planted dandelion or pansies, what do you do with the rest of the plant? Do you dig out the roots, or just leave them? Do you change the soil mix substrate, if so, how often...

    Cypress mulch

Thank you, Larry for the info. I had a very interesting read on temperate rainforest. It seems to a big problem in Alaska and British Columbia. I e-mailed Zoomed to see if they can tell me the origin of the materials, doubt if it would tell me anything, but interesting to see their reaction...

    substrates

James, I thought you had redfoots (RF), not Russians (RT). I would not use Reptibark for Russians especially if they are 4-5" big, because of the possibility of accidental ingestion. Sorry for the confusion. Em

    substrates

Thank you for your concern, Robyn. I thought a lot about this. Here's my take on it for now, if you are interested. It is rather boring.. I saw someone recommending orchid bark. So I went and found out what exactly orchid bark is. It is fir bark used to plant orchid. Orchid bark is also...
