The outside substrate is just regular gardening soil with some coconut fiber mixed in. The indoor substrate is coconut fiber, dessert sand, and I can't remember what the other stuff is but I'll try to check soon- I find she likes to burrow in the combination of the three much better & it's a lot...
If you guys saw my last thread, you saw an outdoor enclosure was in the works while my dog tried to eat my tort. Well, after a week's worth of work, we finished the final push today and her outdoor enclosure is now fully built.
She has her basic water bowl, food bowl, sun rock and log in there...
AJ, my dog, is good about not getting into things he knows he shouldn't. If it's closed off, he won't try to get into it, however if it's open he'll take that as it is. So building an AJ-proof shelter is fairly easy. (Note how I say "AJ-proof," he's a very obdient dog. Definitely has his own...
I will not be giving up my tort nor my dog. Both are true members of our family now and will continue to stay that way. I will, however be building a safe enclosure for her; which is actually already in the works. She was in a temporary enclosure when this happened, which I take full...

Well, I told my mom & went to the grocery store to pick up a few things. Thirty minutes later I come back home to my mom telling me she forgot Shelly was outside & let the dog out...
My Russian came from Petco. Whether they come from the wild or not, Petco doesn't know how to take care of their tortoises. They won't stop selling them, so the least we can do is give them a proper home and care. I consider my Russian a rescue because of the conditions they kept her in. Either...
Glad I asked before I went and bought it! I won't be purchasing the ZooMed enclosure. I'm making my own soon. I'll probably make it look somewhat like the ZooMed enclosure, with the little indoor room so she can sleep, but much bigger. Thanks guys!
I'm looking into buying one for her outdoor enclosure. But I need to know if it's big enough for her & if it's a good enclosure all around. She's about 6 in. Is there another outdoor enclosure good for tortoises if this one isn't?
I read that if the stomach curves outward & they have a short tail it's a female, however never put them on their back because they could suffocate. If it's a male, the stomach curves inward and the tail is long & curves to the side (for mating purposes). That's about all I know on gender...
