Thanks for the info. I thought I did have a large enclosure and plenty of hides. I think this tortoise just doesn't know to get away. I think I will keep her separated for some time. The wounds are quite big and I am sure the male will just go at her again. I have smaller females...
I have a large female Russian tortoise that has been injured by a male Russian tortoise. The male tortoise has repeatably bitten the females front legs in trying to get the female in the right position to mate. My tortoises are kept outside so I did not notice that this was happening until it...
You know your tortoise better than anyone but I also want to mention my experience because it might help you. I have four russians and they are all behaving differently now that the weather is cooler. I too had mine outside and the temps did drop a few weeks ago when it was raining so I...
I need some help. My husband has agreed to help me build a hide for my tortoises now that cooler weather is almost here. I don't know anything about hooking up a heat lamp to a thermostat so the temp can stay correct. Has anyone done this and if so do you have brand names or model numbers of...
I purchased the e-book. It is very basic and did not provide me with any new information. I had done some research on-line and saw some of the info contained in the e-book posted on-line for free. I would spend my money on buying some good food for the Russians instead. Just my opinion!!!!
I have a male russian also. When mine takes off like that he is usually looking for a place to hide. I did get him two female friends recently. He still takes off running. The two females hang out together more than the males/females.
I have lived all over too! Born in Georgia but moved when I was 7. I have lived in Missouri, Ohio, Maryland, Florida and Texas. I now live in San Marcos, CA. Just north of San Diego.
I hope she is. I have read that Russians do not reproduce well in captivity so we will see. I will be sure and let everyone know how it turns out.
In the meantime, I will read-up on my duties as a surrogate mom.
I have two Russians ....male and female. How long after mating does the female produce eggs if she is going too? Can you see changes in the tortoise such as weight gain, shell growth etc? I swear my female looks fatter and wider in the rear. Maybe just wishful thinking on my part. Any other...
Thank You! Yes, that is why I want some more females. If anyone comes across a Russian female in San Diego needing a home I am ready. I keep checking craigslist but no Russians lately.
Thanks everyone for the information. That is what I thought but wanted some other opinions. I am new with the tortoise sexing. I want to get another tortoise and now I know for sure to look for another female.
Thanks Josh for the offer to help with the pictures. I finally figured it out...
I have two Russian tortoises. Do not know if they are female or male?
Any ideas??????? Pictures 1 and 2 are the same tortoise. Pictures 3 and 4 are the same tortoise.
Thank you for the info. I don't need it yet..... only 100* outside today but in a few months the nights will get colder. Want to make sure I am ready!!!
