RE: Holding
My experiences seem to be following the trend here. I have had my tort for almost a year and handled him every day as he gets to venture outside for basking, exploring, and grazing. My lil guy actually seems to look forward to it, as though he is almost asking to go out.
But...
What if you were to just ziplock it and freeze it as is? Often times the ice coating that comes from the ambient humidity in the bag will act as a surface barrier once frozen, and the freezing temps will prevent the growth of any bactieria, pests, or mold.
Oh I am jealous!!
I love all of the designs you have in mind. And if you're anything like me, I would take my favorite features of each one and put them together into my own super creation of a tortoise enclosure! LOL :D I am actually planning on doing that myself as soon as I have both the...
Very nice!! I especially dig the bird cover!
Hmm, I'm thinking about politely stealing your PVC/net idea and combine it with the sprinkler idea proposed by Ron and Wellington. I'm pondering a frame like yours, plus a cross piece at center (Tee instead of coupling), 1/4" (maybe smaller) holes...
I think the enclosure looks great for the lil tort!! :D
I only want to caution you to check your temps and humidity daily as glass terrariums have a tendancy to over heat and tend to have poor air circulation. As long as it gets some outdoor time for sun/grazing, and things are monitored...
+1 Eric!
DO NOT replace your substrate!! LOL ;) I think a lot of people were confused from your first post, but once you explained that the hydroballs were on bottom, then substrate and top layer, I believe everything is good to go! This has been regarded as one of the best setups for high...
Pics pics pics! Sorry Lampshade, but it's very difficult to offer an opinion on a situation like this without being able to see the damage.
But I would say if you have any doubts, Go to the vet. At minimum, the vet may provide you with some materials and instrustions to dress the wound your...
Duckie, I would say that based on your reply, that things are progressing nicely and you should expect to have quite the large tort a lot quicker than you might expect! It sounds like you've definitely got a Strongman on your hands! ;D
IMHO, as long as they are active enough, can lift...
Thanks TortieLuver :)
I don't have much experience with it my self, but I have come across some research that points towards Fertility issues and overall significantly shortened lifespan. I wish I could relocate the articles, I will post links if I do.
I really wish I knew, more...
What an interesting thread everyone!! I just read over everything and think this is a great discussion!
I believe the next step would be to draw from our fellow members to see if we can either validate, dismiss, or correct the theories.
My Sulcata hatched around mid August 2011, so is nearly...
Here's a free bump for ya!
I'll add, just for statistical purposes, my sulcata will be a year old in Mid August, and currently TCL is 12cm (4.7") and Weighs in at 385 grams.
I believe some more information would be helpful in determining whether or not his size is healthy for him...
First...
Hello there!
I believe a Mercury Vapor Bulb (MVB) would be the most efficient starting point for a new tort.
There are many options available, from florescent tube, Compact Florescent (CFL, which have been causing eye issues, best avoided), and Red and Blue incandescent.
Tort's require UVA...
I've been on TFO for about two months now. I had a little hatchling find me not too long ago, so I started scouring the internet for information. TFO was one of the many sites I found, and I have searched and cruised just about every corner of the forum since.
I have been a member of a few...
