I am confirming that these coil type UV lamps are bad news. I didn't realise until I read it on this forum, I was sold the bulb by a supposed expert.
I was wondering why my 2 redfoots were dehydrated all the time, as this is what I found for watery eyes. But increasing humidity did nothing...
Redfoots, about 10cm long. At the minute he just occasionally nibbles on his cuttlefish. I assume that too much calcium has the same effects as it can do on people.
How do you know how much calcium to give your tortoise? I have Googled like crazy and the most scientific answers I can find are purely anecdotal - advice such as a 'light dusting', 'as much as the food can hold when damp' with warnings like 'not too much' and 'dont over do it' really doesnt...
I guess this is just an example that industrialisation doesnt mix well to animals. I worked in a pet store when I was in school, over crowding is sadly quite common, they just want to make lots of money. The store I worked in did keep the animals in excellent conditions, but the over crowding...
Ah the box is outside the vivarium, its the CCD camera for my telescope, my other obsession! :)

Thanks for the responses! This puts my mind at rest, I will vary the diet some more though. The humidity I will see if I cant get it higher, should I be aiming for big droplets of condensation on the glass? My name is Mark, we live in Holland. Also the tortoise library is an excellent resource...
Not sure what you refer to, but it could be the water and food bowl, plastic plant, bits of wood or the camera in a box behind the tank. Edit - maybe the bit of cuttlefish bone? :)
