Good idea. I could easily do that and our garage doesn't get too cold. Probably too hot at times but I could move the box to a cooler spot during the day if that happens. I have a coworker that has her tort in a box in the garage. I've done it before as well when our house got too hot (when I...
It's above ground with leaves in it. It gets between 40-50 most nights, sometimes it does get to freezing. It doesn't get wet.
In the past once she seemed to be hibernating, I put her in a large plastic tub with a lid with carpet on the bottom and shredded newspaper on top. I would then...
I am having the same issue with mine this year. She has slowed down but is not hibernating. We live in Santee where it gets warm during the day but it's been cold at night. Others I know in Santee have hibernating torts. Apparently Franklin doesn't want to miss out on anything.
I am in need of advice. I have a 6 year old female Marginated tortoise. We have had her since she was a hatchling. She has hibernated (very short periods of 4-6 weeks each year) the last 2-3 years. She doesn't seem to want to hibernate this year. I've read lots of information on hibernation...
I just bought some escarole and watercress after reading some comments here. She never really like watercress before but this time she ate it. She loved the escarole! She likes corn and dandelion and Cecil Bruner roses. She also loves alyssum. Her favorite is broccoli but I know there's an...
Haha! Yes, back to the biting. I'm going to try and supply her with lots of food. I know she seems to be eating non-stop since coming out of her short hibernation. I'm sure she will settle down once she loads up on some calories.
Besides the new biting behavior, she also started another new...
Thanks for all the info. I was confusing herbivore with omnivore. Yes, we figured that she only ate plants. I believe one website mentioned that Marginateds have been seen eating snails. We have never fed Franklin any meat (we're actually vegetarians ourselves :)).
So is the biting a...
Thanks so much for the info! Now I can really refer to Franklin as "her". I take it these tortoises are or were sold in pet shops. How else would they ever get to this part of the world? Reading up on this type of tortoise, I find that it's an herbivore. Wow, no wonder Franklin wants my toes. ;)...
Maybe I should post a better pic of him/her. I'm very curious now.

Photos of Franklin, the 6 year old mystery tortoise. :)

Just googled images of Marginated Tortoises and he sure does look like them!
Thanks so much for the valuable info. I googled Herman's tortoise and read up on them. Looks like the care is very similar. The longevity of the Herman's is much shorter, it seems.
Franklin has always gotten lots of veggies (mostly fresh but sometimes canned without salt), a little fruit (not...
Found him/her in a canyon in a suburb in San Diego. I figured someone must have had CA tortoises but thinking about it now, someone having Hermanns makes more sense. A year later my husband was working back in that canyon area (he's a gardener) and saw dead juvenile tortoises (the same size as...
What?? He's not a Ca tortoise? We just assumed since hubby found him in some field in San Diego where we live. Our tortoise friend looked at him and determined he had just hatched. He was very soft and tiny. Hmm, I'll have to research Hermanns now. What are the differences between the two tortoises?
Haha! I guess he woke up from his nice short nap and decided this yard is now his yard. Still trying to figure out if Franklin is a male or female. Maybe she's just cranky.
I will attach some photos of Franklin. Maybe you can tell me if "he" is showing male territorial behavior. Or maybe "she" has an attitude now. :)
Thanks!
