i have had my little guy for a week now and he has been doing ok. I just feel like I am doing something wrong. My temps are 75 in the cool end, 85 in the warm end with a basking spot of 100. I give him daily soaks. He eats a few bites everyday. He seems to sleep the day away under his basking lamp buried in his substrate he seems so hot when I check him. Is this normal? He also never uses his water dish to drink, or drinks from his bath other then the first day I got him. His eyes don't seem as wet and I am so worried he is dehydrating. He also tends to drag his legs behind him during his bath. I'm so worried. He is only 4 months old.

What are you checking your temps with? Your tortoise should not feel hot. Even warm to the touch seems unusual.
Can you supply photos of your enclosure and of your lighting?

I have a little one too. He/she is about 5 months old now and hid a lot for the first month. Over the last few weeks, he's become real active. I think it takes some of them longer to adjust than others. I can't say much about your setup and temps since I'm new at this too but hang in there he may just need some time.

Hello, welcome to the forum. Your substrate looks a little dry so I would add water to it and stir it around with your hands. What are you using for heat? I think baby tortoises need the temperature to stay at 80° at the lowest. They also need more humidity in adults. And low temperatures and high humidity can lead to a respiratory infection. I would suggest soaking your tortoise every day for at least 20 minutes. I'm sure some more experienced members will come along soon with other suggestions.

This is normal behavior from the sound of it. Just like in the wild, tortoise babies will only come out to feed and bury themselves quickly right after. This is their way of hiding from the predators. Just like all babies, they will eat, sleep and poop... ^_^ Looks like your using coconut husk... looking a little dry... whats your humidity like?
