The previous owner gave us a small bag of this and told us to feed it to him every 3rd day. 4 pellets, mist them til they feel soft to the touch. He sure does like them, he pokes his head up and charges right over when he sees them ! With the greens he just picks at them, he does eat them but doesn't go at them like he does the pellets.

The Mazuri pellets are good food.
So good that some tortoises get hooked on them.
It is normal.

Thank you for the reply, this is good to know since our "desert lawn" consists of rocks ! We are purchasing store bought greens, but have been checking and intend to gets some plants going before he gets too much bigger .

I like to soak the pellets and make them mushy for babies. I offer some once or twice a week. You could try offering just one pellet thoroughly mixed in with good weeds, grass or leaves daily. This might get him used to all the good stuff. I linked a food thread for you on your other thread, but here it is again for convenience.

We've been very happy with Mazuri pellets.
Here we throw them in a grinder and mix that with different organic hays (also ground up).
He gets this mix free choice when he's inside and has access to grass outside.
He gets an organic (no spinach) spring mix in the morning before he goes out.
Succulents and prickly pear cactus regularly also.
He'll get this all outside free choice once he's living outside permanently.
Once he's bigger I'll give him the pellets and hay unground up but for now he gets a mix to keep him eating variety.
Yes he's spoiled. Lol

Ah the days when rocky was little and I had to prepare his meals. He spends his days out mowing my forest of a lawn now but we started him with mazuri as a little one, with mixed greens and grasses as well. He didn't like it that much to start with though. He didn't like a lot of things sulcatas are "supposed" to like. We still order him some to help pacify him in the winter. Just be careful, soggy mazuri goes sour pretty quick. You can't mistake that smell.

We were told to give Speedy pellets every 3rd day. I have fallen into a little routine of making pellet day rehydration day also. It works for me . :tort:

Could you share why you don't give spinach? Is something wrong with it?

Thank you!

It's high in oxilates. Some spinach is fine. I used to pick it out if there was a bunch, but I rarely feed grocery greens. Theirs so much free weeds/grass out there!

What Blake M said. I've read many times that spinach is toxic to torts. So it one of the things I steer clear of. Not that a little would hurt but I figure there's enough "healthy" alternatives out there. Why feed something I know isn't good for him. :)

It's actually not that bad. But, just save it for yourself at least! Great for us! Here's a link about spinach
