Hi all,

I am a tortoise enthusiast living in SE Asia. I have 4 elongated tortoises (1 male, 3 females).

The females are 10-11 inches long and weigh 2200-2800 grams. The male is 7 inches and weighs 800 grams.

Question: Is it mechanically possible for a male this small to mate with a much larger female?

He definitely gives it his best effort, but I'm not sure he has the (ahem) length needed for the job.

Hi Huck,

It sure is possible and funny, albeit too aggressive at times.. My little guy is almost half the size of my biggest female. Yet, they have successfully reproduced.

Cheers

Hey Scruffy, good to hear! It's pretty hilarious to watch the proceedings. My largest female has taken to ramming him back.

Thanks for the response!

Nothing to report, TammyJ. I moved the male into the females' enclosure and he seems to have calmed down a bit. None of the females show significant weight gain (maybe 200 grams more than a month ago).

I know this is an old post.. but how long approximately after mating did they lay eggs?
It's hard to put a number on it, since they do a lot of mating and the females nest at different times. I would guess around 6 weeks to 2 months.
