We found this turtle our backyard near the pool area. I did some research and I believe it may be an Eastern Box Turtle, more specifically a terrapene carolina. Here are two pics attached. We want to be able to care for it correctly so can someone please confirm or help identify the breed??

Thanx so much!

What part of the US are you from? Most are in hibernation this time of year unless located in a warmer state.

I'm in Tulsa Oklahoma and I'm almost positive that's a 3 toed. I can't believe it was still out wondering around. Did you guys just get hit with the cold snap the last few days?

I actually never knew that! Learn something new about boxies. I'm more familiar with Ornate Box Turtles.
I have 3 toed and ornates and a few mixes. It's not out of the question it's a mix.

Thanks!!

Yes, we've been hit with low temps these last few days, so definitely surprised it survived that cold front.. recently found it earlier today so just want to make sure we can provide some care for it while we find a permanent home. Thank you so much for your help though, greatly appreciate it :)

No problem, check out that section I linked and that should help. She needs to be kept inside now for the winter. It's probably a little late for hibernation.

This is chicken one of my 3 toed. Notice the similarities in the shell.

It's a beautiful box turtle. I live around Dallas and they are definitely native to this area, I usually see a couple every spring / summer. You should consider keeping it over winter and then letting it go where you found it. They have homing instincts so they will always try to go back to where they were taken from and may have to cross roads to get there. If you don't want to let it go for whatever reason, I'm sure someone near you could give it a good home.
