The way I feel about the newbie thing is that not all people have ill intentions, but also with all the misinformation that is out there, is that it is good to get to know the right information before getting the tortoise/turtle. In some ways restricting the newbie from a tort/turtle isnt always a bad thing. I think as owners we want the best if the time arises where we have to rehome our kiddos and we want them to have healthy, happy lives.

Would that umbrella cover if they had mutated into ninjas and were teenagers? I just want to be clear on what we could get free from you lol

I'm just kidding around, I don't think it's necessarily a newbie thing rather than just strangers in general, I wouldn't give a free pet to a random stranger in person either, at least if you charge them you can be a little more assured that they won't just sell it to make a quick buck or neglect it because they are financially invested. But if it's someone that I trust it's different, it's just that newbies just happen to be people you don't know

It's a great way to meet members, also.
I've met a half dozen or so members in my general area through selling or trading animals.
All of us newbies at some point.
Now friends.

I won't mention it to my wife. She wants one to keep our puppy company.
She had one of those micro pigs a long time ago that grew to about 300 pounds.
The size can't be trusted.
Cute kid.

Yeah there is no such thing as a micro pig, but I do own both parents and although I can't really weight them the are about as tall as a boxer but a lot thicker and they are adults, if anybody tell you they have an adult pig less than 70 lbs it's either sick or malnourished or maybe it's a dwarf but there isn't a breed smaller than that, my females are about 120 each and the male about 90lbs but that's tiny for pigs. Lol oh yeah the kid is very cute lol

I agree. Ive just signed up recently but Ive had turtles and tortoises in the past, and have done much research on homing one. I would never try to get a tortoise without building its home first which is currently my primary goal to get started with! And then hopefully I can find someone who isn't biased to give me or sell me one.

By the time you read, ask questions, post enclosure questions and pictures, etc. you will have more posts than you know. Welcome to the forum, by the way!

I am exactly what you guys are talking about. I had a sick hatchling Leopard tort, and ghosted these forums looking for hints to rehabilitate him, as well as two vet trips and home medicating and force feeding. Sadly, he didn't make it. Only today did I notice there is an adoption subforum, and the very first listing I see is for a 3 year old leopard tortoise that needs re-homing. So I signed up in hopes of landing a deal like that because I used a lot of capital trying to help the now deceased tort recover (bless him). I get that my new presence and lack of visibility in the community makes me sketchy. Why should anyone re-home their beloved pet to such a new, inexperienced guy? It makes sense to be skeptical. But I have no issues being transparent. I can tell you where I live, what I would feed, what I know of the species, enclosure requirements, etc. But skepticism in the way to go, for sure.

Most of us would be pretty comfortable dealing with a Newby with such a great opening introduction.
It sounds sincere.
Trying to grab free tortoises of seemingly any species just because they're free and never saying so much as hello is sketchy.
Best wishes to you. Communication is key. When you contact someone you are unfamiliar with, give them a short bio JUST LIKE THIS and include details.

I think a very good course of action for anyone considering adding a tortoise to their family would be firstly to decide what specie you'd like to get, then go to the specie specific section of this forum and read up on them, determining if you and your household can make it work long term. Study hard there, read the posts made by others, and ask questions. If you don't understand something, ask a question to get better information and go from there.
Make an introduction post and let us get to know you. Go to the "pretend chat 2.14"thread or the "cold dark room" thread where you can have none tortoise conversation with people and meet fellow members and get to know us and you. All of these things help develop a trusting relationship with your, "new neighbors".

I don't want to fail again. I want to be more informed and as prepared as I can be. I want to have a tortoise so long that I pass it on in my will. I tend not to handle pet death well. I will explore the forums you suggest. Thank you.
