I slept with my tortoise...

It was a dark and stormy night.... but no really...

It was cool outside, and a storm rolled through and knocked the power out. The power was going to be out for at least 24 hours. My tortoise was getting cold...

I slept on my back with my tortoise on my chest, under the blankets, and she was happy. She stayed there quiet and still all night... Perfectly warm, lol.

Has anyone else had to do something like this? I would also ask, is there a better way to handle long power outages and tortoise warmth (aside from having a back-up generator)? The power is back on now, and she is back in her tank.

Thanks

p.s. - I have a tortoise table almost finished! I will have pics and a new post in a few days!

I've thought about that too, will invest in some hand warmers. Our power was off for 3 days a couple of weeks ago, luckily we have a generator but was only run for about half the day. It was warm weather so moved him to a temp tank upstairs where it was warmer overnight, I'm not sure my dog would have agreed to share bed space with the tort, or my husband for that matter! Lol

The handwarmers will only work if you're trying to warm a small area. I use a 3 gallon Rubbermaid tub. I wrap the handwarmers in a dish towel and then put some dirt on top of it. Not very deep. With the lid on it can stay over 80° for quite a while.

Ive posted this before some 3 years back it seems. Back when I got my female sulcata, Makita, I took her out for dinner and a drink. We had a wonder evening, but being a true gentleman, it was dinner and a drink only! I'd never ask her to sleep with me, thank you very much. ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1496724536.791736.jpg

I second the suggestion to use a towel or ground cover to disperse the heat of the hand warmers. Not only will it give you more coverage, but those things can get HOT to the point where it could burn a little guy (like those plug in heat rocks everyone used to use for reptiles that are now pretty frowned upon)! I've used a hand warmer inside a sock as sort of a wireless heat pad when I was moving my leopard gecko in the car during a midwest winter.

Once in college (Detroit), the heat went out in the entire dorm building over MLK weekend. My roommates and I were all dressed in 4 layers of clothes, under a blanket on the couch, and my gecko was tucked in the front of my shirt. She didn't budge --it was just too damn cold for her to care about going anywhere!

Omg! Ken, how cute!!!! I want one some day....:) if my children (at least one of them) settle down domestically (house with big garden at least in place other than Alaska) otherwise we'd have problem passing her down when I'm gone. At almost 51 one has gotta think about that. Makita is a beauty!!!

Yes that is a huge Tortoise. It may crush the rib cage if we put this tortoise on our chest
