Humid hide--found a cool box

I found this box at WalMart yesterday. I thought it might make a good humid hide for my RF's indoor/winter enclosure. Question is, do you use the snap-on lid on the bottom as it is a little wider and will accomodate the tortoise longer (box tapers slightly to the bottom)? Or do I set the box upside down directly on the substrate? I plan to glue a sponge on the upper portion, whether that ends up being the lid or the bottom of the box. They had a larger size too--about the same height but larger in width and depth. I liked that this one wasn't clear like most shoeboxes. Also, how small should I cut the hole in the side? Just big enough for her to get in now? 20170901_142214.jpg

If it were me, I would put the top on top so you can easily lift it to check things and clean.
I have made the mistake a hundred times, putting the box upside down placed with the lid as the floor and regret it every time.

So, do I leave the base of the box and put more substrate in it, like coconut coir? I was thinking leaving the lid on top would be easier. Thanks very much for your input!

I agree! You will find it to be more difficult to lift the box up from the lid itself, that from taking off the lid!

I'd use it with no lid upside down.

Door hole should be just big enough for the tortoise. Enlarge it periodically, as needed.

Use the lid. Much easier, been there done it too many times all the other ways. Cut the hole and fill with substrate. Leaving the lid as a lid. You won't regret it, but you will regret it not using the lid as a lid.

My RF absolutely loves this box. She sleeps in it every night now that she's inside. I put the lid on the top, glued a sponge to it, and have moss inside it. It's a hit!
