I have a pair of Burmese browns and the female laid her first clutch of 39 eggs on July 18. Pretty exciting...and a surprise. I had to put together an incubator quickly; unfamiliar territory. I obtained many opinions about substrate type, substrate moisture, general set-up, etc. I ended up with an ice chest, small hole in the lid and aquarium bubbler/aerator for air intake at the bottom, heat pad on the bottom, rack, 2 containers, each covered with lid, with holes around the edge of container for ventilation, vermiculite moistened until further moisture could not be wrung out (I did not hear about 1:1 verm/water ratio until more recently), eggs "X'd" on superior position and buried about 50%, temp 85-87 (mostly 86), humidity 80-90% (various opinions on this). I am now at day 36 and all of the eggs are in some condition of collapse (severe denting/dimpling). I doubt that any will be viable. I do plan to wait out the 60-70 days for a miracle even though it is not expected. What could I have done differently?

Sorry it has taken us so long to get back to you.

I have had that happen if I allowed the egg chamber to become too dry. These eggs require a pretty humid environment. Maybe you can cover them with some paper towel and spritz water on the towel as it dries?????

Best wishes for you and your tortie eggs. I think it is very exciting to see your torties have eggs. I have my fingers crossed that you will get a miracle!

I am sorry to report 0/39 viability. I am hoping to give it another go next year and I’m looking for more info. Yvonne, i think you said that you used a manufactured egg incubator, without a turner, that has a plastic screen that the eggs are set on and a well to hold water for humidity. How was your success with Manouria emys eggs using that arrangement?
