I am trying to let my Russians mate. Every time I put the female in with the male, he attacks her. Tries to bite her legs and face. Is this normal? Should I leave them together for a while and see if anything happens? I get scared and separate them.

You are putting a strange tortoise into the male’s territory. He is defending his patch.

If you put him in her enclosure they will probably still fight.

Can I suggest that you try a neutral space that neither of them thinks they own. They’re a scrappy species at the best of times.

Well, I did put him in her enclosure, he went crazy again. I just watched for a bit. Then , he mounted her, had his mouth open , I was reading on the forum and heard a squeal. As he tried to get down it seemed they may have been , how do I say this, together. Maybe I might get lucky. I did separate them again. Should I leave them together for longer?

Ah. The sound of a mating male achieving his aim. It’s very distinctive :D

You may have success. Make sure your female has somewhere to lay.
