we have been without power for 6 hours now and I am really worried about my baby YF. Power is not suppose to go in till early tomorrow. Temp is down to 70 in his cage, but humidity is still around 80%. Anyone have any suggestions how to keep him warm if the temp keeps dropping. What do I need to have on hand for next time this could happen?

The same as with tropical fish, I suppose... You throw duvets and blankets over the top and hope for the best.

Bad weather happens in the wild too and for short periods they are usually fine. I hope the power is back soon. Keep an eye on your little one and hopefully all will be well :)

Hello, I am very sorry to hear of your predicament. Last Summer in West Michigan where I live we lost power from a severe storm for two and a half days. My brother has a large iguana and by day two he was freaking out about his baby getting too cold. We ended up going out and buying a cheap generator for under a hundred bucks. You just keep the generator outside, put gas in it, and then you just run extension cord to whatever you want to power. It gave out enough power to run his refrigerator and his reptile lights until the power came back on. And now he has it for when the next time this happens. I wish you the best of luck.

And don't forget you can soak your tortoise in warm water if you have gas or another method of heating it.
Don't make it too hot, but you can keep his body temperature up this way if it drops too low.

Don't let him be wet as well as cool. Keep him either warm and dry or soaking in warm water until power comes back.
I would wrap his dry enclosure in blankets for a few hours, then soak in warm water for a half hour, alternatively if you can.
That is if you cannot get a generator!

Good idea with the blankets!

Power came back on 10 hours after loosing it. I did wrap his tank in blankets and my son gave him an extra long soak this morning. He seems good. I was home all day and keep an eye on him. He was eating and being active. Definitely wasn’t prepared and will make sure next time no one has to stress about it

I just had a thought...
A styrofoam container (some are used to ship exotic animals, but I think the main reason for them is to ship fish. Get some of those activated heat packs, and next time the power goes out, then just wrap the tort up in a towel, place it in the styrofoam container and crack one of those heat packs. Replace the heat packs if the power is out for several days. Isn't this how some torts are shipped? I know that's how we transport our exotic critters to the expos.

Good idea, but you have to be careful. Always there to monitor. Maybe include a digital thermometer in the kit.
