392ED762-F6DC-4281-ACA1-62B40FCFEAC3.jpeg i posted this photo on my thread for Elder. But thought I’d put it here too. While watching Elder come out & eat yesterday - this little spotted skunk came out of the hide to steal Mazuri.

It was a cold morning - 45f - maybe the skunk is sleeping in Elders box for warmth. This morning I put a trap there & caught him. Not I need to take him to the woods & let him go.

Hope I don’t get sprayed ! Wish me luck ...

Cute little guy. I've always been worried about trapping a skunk when I put out a trap to catch the opossums.

I put a towel over the trap to carry it to the woods , and when I lifted the door he scurried out without looking back. Lol.
He didn’t even spray the towel.
But it could’a gone another way ! Never been sprayed but my dog was once. Had to give him a bath in $30 of V8 tomato juice to get the smell gone.
Now I’ll see if he just comes back home to the warm box. Hope not.

We had a skunk that used to show up at parties and look for hand outs he came around for years. You should have seen the face of people when they hadn't seen him before.

That animal is beautiful. I am envious of the experience you had with it.

I was amazed and at first briefly mystified by what I was looking at. It had blotches of white rather than stripes but after it darted out a few times I recognized him as a spotted skunk. Took a short video of the little bugger but would have to convert the file to upload here.

Years ago had a friend with a domesticated skunk ( de-scented) & it crossed my mind what a nice pet he was. Much like a cat really. But it’s not okay to keep a wild caught skunk in Florida , besides , I already have quite the zoo :). So off to the woods he went.

His coat was indeed beautiful. Amazing to see one since they are normally nocturnal.

So lucky you didn't get sprayed. He must not have felt threatened. I love watching the skunks that visits my yard in the spring and fall. They are so cute.

Skunks have to be able to raise their tails up to spray and are usually prevented from doing so in a trap.
Beautiful leopard by the way.

When I worked at a rural hospital a few years back, the Maintenance crew were the ones assigned the duties of removing unwanted animals that showed up. Usually this was raccoons or the occasional coyote. But they apparently had been given specific orders to leave any skunks alone and NOT try to remove them!!!!!! There was one largish skunk who apparently lived not far from the hospital or maybe even on-grounds somewhere. Whenever he came around, he toddled quite casually with all the confidence of someone who belongs there!!! Everyone avoided him and all was well. Fun! :D

Yes. They do seem unconcerned about other animals Apparently their defense mechanism gives them assurance. When I was on a camping -fishing trip in Alaska we woke on morning to some noise outside the tents & discovered a huge porcupine rummaging in the burned out campfire. He musta smelled remnants of dinner. We got up , made breakfast & he hung around as we tossed him bread & scraps. Totally unconcerned about our presence. It was interesting. I sure wouldn’t want any of his long quills in me !

I considered leaving the skunk alone to share Elders hide , but I have cats & dogs also. Really don’t want one of them squirted in skunky stink. :).

He may yet come back , since I only took him a short distance away for release. He probably posed no threat to my tortoise. They seemed quite content to share the Mazuri.

And I wonder if ADULT skunks are dangerous to torts?

I would think that would much depend on the size of the tort. The larger they are the tougher their hide. Baby torts seem to be vulnerable to everything.

Skunks , to my knowledge are opportunistic and eat just about anything, plant & protein. But are not carnivores other than bugs & maybe small rodents, or carrion. They are scavengers.

I would be more concerned about rats or raccoons , since they are more aggressive.

But honestly I don’t know. That one was young , probably no more than a month or so old. He certainly posed no threat directly but had scent glans already. When the trap closed he sprayed a little , probably in fear. I could smell it.

What a cutie. I think you did right by moving him. Skunks are the #2 carrier of rabies and they can also spread Leptosporosis. You may want to make sure your pup is up to date on it's shorts if the skunk is going to hang out around the yard.

Ya. We keep the animals up on their shots. We get raccoon, possum , Squirrle, skunk, Fox , & stray dogs & cats on occasion. My Rotty runs everything out of the fenced yard

Many years ago I had a pet skunk named Peek A Boo. She was delightful, & got along fine with my dog & cats.
Her very favorite treat was a piece of "double stuffed" Oreo...that was the ice-breaker when she met new people.
She lived to be 9 years old, when she had a stroke, & had to be euthanized.
I lived in PA, where it was legal to keep them. I had ordered her from a facility in, I think, Indiana. Sadly, they bred lab animals, but also sold babies as pets. "Boo" was 5 weeks old when she arrived, unweaned. I fed her puppy formula with an eyedropper. I loved her dearly.
